TLFG: 28 October - 3 November 2024

Welcome to the latest edition of TLFG and thanks for taking the time to pop by.

How has your week been?

I was off the whole time and finally return to work tomorrow.

As you'll soon discover, I've had quite a busy time and at this point I've only got previews for Monday and match maps for the whole week - updates will follow ASAP.

The week began with my latest A-Z of London football club runs.

G was the letter we were after with Glebe being the obvious choice but being located 17 miles away from where I live, I felt that was a bit far on this occasion so after a bit of research Liam came up with Grenfell Athletic instead.

Formed in the wake of the terrible fire at the tower in 2017, the club have men's and women's sides who have been playing county league football ever since.

Young midfielder Prudie Todd-Warmoth starred for Actonians on Sunday as they went top

So we decided to start by running to the tower to pay our respects before heading south to Kings House Sports Ground, by the Thames at Barnes Bridge, where they play.

We're spoilt for choice for H.

My favourite non-league side Harrow Borough will almost certainly get a visit but we might combine it with one or two others on our way there or back.

Towards the end of the week we celebrated my youngest daughter's birthday before heading to the West Country where most of my immediate family have now migrated too.

A lot of us have birthdays at this time of year so we had a big gathering at a restaurant in Taunton which was great.

All in all, despite having a good amount of time off I reached Sunday having not watched any live football but I put that right after a dash back to the capital that morning.

No prizes for guessing that my afternoon was spent seeing how Actonians got on in their latest Women's National League match against fellow independent club (i.e. not affiliated to a men's one) London Seaward.

The east London club used to go under the Leyton Orient name until the O's inexplicably dropped them with little warning in 2021 - a strange move as they were and are a good fourth-tier side whilst Orient's own new team are mired in the seventh tier and struggling to progress.

Games between these two are often tight and the previous two games between them at Rectory Park had seen Seaward fight back from 3-1 and 2-0 down to get draws.

This season has begun very differently for the two sides with Actonians coming into the game in second and Seaward second bottom so as I supporter I was quite confident of getting something.

Thankfully I wasn't disappointed as a superb free-kick from youngster Prudie Todd-Warmoth and a header from midfielder Kat Turner, her first for the club, just after half-time were enough to seal a fairly comfortable 2-0 win.

With news of London Bees' very late equaliser against leaders Norwich City filtering through from The Hive, there were celebrations on the pitch as the players realised their efforts had put Actonians top for the first time this season!

Of course, they've won nothing yet but for an independent women's club with a fraction of the budget of those around them, it's some achievement to see them leading the way with just over a third of the season gone.

On this evidence, Seaward look a little unlucky to be in the bottom two. They're a perfectly competent side who more than hold their own but there was no end product and I don't think A's goalkeeper Elisa Dogor actually had to make a save of any note all afternoon.

Talking of the German stopper, Sunday's game saw her record her seventh clean sheet of the season underlining again how this side is built on a platform of solid defence.

The next two weeks are going to be incredibly tough and could go some way to defining their campaign.

First up they travel to Oxford United, who play a level above them, in the Women's FA Cup First Round and the following Sunday they travel to Norwich for a huge top-of-the-table clash.

Right I've got to go - my six-year-old is champing at the bit to begin her half-term holiday with a trip to Kew Gardens to do the 'Room on the Broom' trail. Wish me luck!

THE WEEK AHEAD

The EFL Cup and EFL Trophy make their return this week and we've also got the always highly anticipated FA Cup First Round.

Unusually, there's only one Premier League game and only two in the Championship which means it might be a good time to check out a non-league club either in the FA Cup or in a more regular match of which there are loads to choose from.

In the women's game, the WSL and Championship are back after the international break and the Women's FA Cup reaches its First Round stage too.

Last but not least, the FA Youth Cup for U18 sides has a few ties for you to enjoy too.

As always, please make sure you check with clubs before you travel just in case a game has been called off or the venue or kick-off time has changed - this is highly possible for some of the lower non-league clubs. Also, please let me know if anything is wrong or missing.

Details on all of this week's games can be found on the following match maps. If you've never used them before, please note that when there is more than one match at a specific ground you'll only be able to see individual match pins if you zoom right in. If you don't, the pins obscure each other and you might miss them. To avoid this, you can also scroll down the list of games on the drop down menu at the top of the map page to make sure you get all the information. Games are listed from top to bottom in date order so Monday's games (yellow pin) will appear first and Sunday's (orange pin) last. Games are also ranked in terms of status so the higher the division, the higher up the list they will appear on each day.
Also if you're unfamiliar with the English league structure I indicate the level at which an individual league sits in the national 'pyramid' with the Premier League at the top (Level 1) and various minor leagues at the bottom (Level 10). Typically a top level game will see crowds of anywhere between 20,000-60,000. These figures will gradually decline as you go down the leagues until you get to Levels 8-10 where attendances of 150 or less are most common.

It should also be noted that the top four levels are for fully professional teams. Level 5 has a mixture of professional and semi-professional teams, while Levels 6-10 will see most players paid but it will vary from no more than travel expenses at the bottom, right up to several hundred pounds a week at the top.

TLFG DAILY DIGEST
In the following section, I list what are in my opinion the most notable games of the week and give some brief reasons for my choice. Check the maps above for kick-off times, ticket info and directions.

Monday 28 October

Professional Development League
Brentford v QPR @7pm - it's derby day in this U21 league between two west London rivals. The Bees are fielding a specific U21 side and entering a league for the first time in several years after previously playing friendlies and county cup games with a 'B' team. With 10 points from seven games, they haven't made a particularly eye-catching start. The R's are just one place and three points above them but they've played three games more and have the leakiest defence in the division. The match is being played in Staines and you can buy tickets in advance for £5 or pay on arrival but it's card only

Surrey Senior Cup Preliminary Round
Carshalton Athletic v Epsom & Ewell @745pm - these two south London sides get their county cup campaigns underway on Monday. The Robins are one of the most successful clubs in the competition, having made it to the final eight times. However, their last win came way back in 1992 so they're overdue some success in this cup which has been running since 1882. The Salts have never made the final and given they play two levels below Carshalton, they'll do well to progress here. Tickets appear to be £11 which is a little steep in my opinion as most clubs discount their prices for the early rounds of cups like this - check social media on the day to see if this is correct

ECL Division 1 South
Barkingside v Harlow Town @745pm - in the 10th tier, there's an important match affecting clubs at opposite ends of the table. The 'Side sit just two points above the relegation zone whilst the visitors are second with two games in hand on the leaders. The hosts are very welcoming to neutrals and groundhoppers so if you're free and able to get to the Ilford area, they'd love to see you. Tickets are £5 on the gate

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Tuesday 29 October

EFL Cup Fourth Round
Brentford v Sheffield Wednesday @8pm - we're down to the last 16 in this competition and, on paper, the Premier League hosts should start as strong favourites against their Championship opponents. Brentford have never won or even been to the final whilst the Owls made it twice in the early '90s, winning it in 1991. Unlike most Bees games, tickets are on sale to non-members but they've almost gone so don't delay!

EFL Trophy
We're still in the group stage of this competition at the moment and there are two games this evening. Charlton Athletic host Chelsea U21s (tickets) at The Valley whilst AFC Wimbledon welcome Brighton & Hove Albion U21s to Plough Lane (tickets). These games are often pretty low key so don't expect massive crowds

Isthmian League South Central
Ashford Town (Middlesex) v Farnham Town @745pm - the Tangerines have had a poor start to the season, not helped by the fact that their ground is temporarily shut for a 3G pitch installation, but they pushed top club Farnham really hard when they played last month and only lost 2-1. The visitors won the CCL Premier South with ease last season and looked like breezing through this division too but they've stuttered a bit in recent weeks and although top, the chasing pack are just behind them. This match is being played at Cobham and tickets will be available on the gate

Isthmian League Cup
Hayes & Yeading United v Harrow Borough @745pm - there are lots of county and league cup matches at non-league level on Tuesday night with this derby in west London the pick of the ties in my opinion. Both these sides suffered relegation from the Southern League Premier South last season. H&YU had been challenging for the title and promotion in recent seasons so their slide was a shock, Harrow's not so much. However, this season it's the Boro who have started really strongly and if they both put full-strength sides out then they should win. Tickets will be available on the gate

CCL Premier North
Bedfont Sports v Wallingford & Crowmarsh @745pm - a lot of the focus in this division has been on Egham Town and North Greenford United who are the top two but back in sixth we have Bedfont Sports. The west London club made the play-offs last season and they actually have enough games in hand to go top if they win them. The visitors are way down in 14th but they too have games in hand which could put them among the promotion contenders if they win them. Tickets will be available on the gate for £8
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wednesday 30 October

EFL Cup Fourth Round
Tottenham Hotspur v Manchester City @815pm - arguably the tie of the round takes place at the THS on Wednesday. Spurs are regularly mocked for not winning much but it's this competition that has brought them the most joy in recent years. When I say 'recent' I mean 2008 but they have made the final three more times since, most recently in 2021. However, over the last 10 years, City have dominated winning it six times. Saying that, they've missed out on the last three finals as Liverpool (twice) and Manchester United have claimed the crown instead. Tickets are only available to members

FAWNL Southern Premier
Watford v AFC Wimbledon @745pm - there's a bonus bit of women's third-tier action on Wednesday at Wealdstone's Grosvenor Vale ground in Ruislip. These sides were two divisions apart last season but the Hornets suffered relegation from the Championship whilst Dons won the title in their fourth-tier division. Seven games into this campaign, only one goal separates them in midtable with the hosts just ahead so it should be close. Tickets
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thursday 31 October

FA Youth Cup First Round
Barking v Whitehawk @745pm - youth and development football takes centre stage on Thursday and this match at Mayesbrook Park is the one which most interests me. The Blues were the talk of the competition last year making it all the way from the Extra Preliminary Round to the Third Round where Millwall required extra-time to beat them at The Den. Amazingly, they appear to be on course to do it again, winning through five rounds already to make this stage again. Whitehawk haven't done badly either, getting past four opponents to get this far. They are higher ranked than Barking but given the London club's record, they've got a great chance. Tickets will be available on the gate for £5
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Friday 1 November

Premier League 2
There's a busy schedule of U21 games on Friday night with the derby between Chelsea and Arsenal at Kingsmeadow topping the bill (tickets). Crystal Palace host Tottenham Hotspur at Sutton United (tickets) whilst West Ham United welcome Fulham to Rush Green - tickets are available on the gate for £5. All games start at 7pm

Essex Senior League
Woodford Town v Saffron Walden Town @745pm - two of the top six in the ESL meet at Ashtons for this big ninth-tier game. Both sides have games in hand which if won would put them first and third respectively so it's an even bigger game than it might as first appear. Tickets will be available on the gate for £5

ECL Division 1 South
Cannons Wood v Coggeshall Town @745pm - there's also a top-six clash in the 10th tier. The hosts are fourth and currently the top-ranked side in the division from TLFG's catchment area. The visitors have two games in hand and will draw level with them if they win here. This match is being played at Aveley and tickets will be available on the gate for £7
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Saturday 2 November

Championship
QPR v Sunderland @3pm - unusually for a regular football Saturday there are no Premier League games in London and only one in the EFL, meaning good old QPR top the bill for the first time in ages. I say they top the bill but perhaps it's the visitors who really will be. The Mackems have spent many years in the top flight but they've been stuck in the EFL doldrums for seven years now. They even found themselves in League One for four seasons but this is the best they've looked for some time. They arrive at Loftus Road five points clear at the top. They managed to extend this lead last weekend, thanks to the R's highly unexpected 0-0 draw at second placed Burnley. The London club are in the relegation zone having won only one game this season so will definitely start as underdogs. Not many tickets are left so buy now if you want to go

National League South
Aveley v Weymouth @3pm - the main reason only one of 'the 92' are playing at home on Saturday is because it's the First Round of the FA Cup. By a quirk of the draw, all of our local League One and League Two clubs have been drawn away and the London non-league clubs with home ties are playing on Sunday. Therefore, after QPR, the next highest ranked teams you can get to watch are in the sixth tier. This match at Parkside is of huge importance as it features the bottom two in the division so they'll be desperate to avoid defeat. Already well adrift of safety, really only a win will do for either. Tickets
Welling United v Chippenham Town @3pm - sitting just above the relegation zone, these are two of the sides that Aveley and Weymouth have to catch so these two could really do with three points too. It's just over a year since they last played each other at Park View Road and on that occasion it ended 0-0. Tickets

Isthmian League Premier
Dulwich Hamlet v Wingate & Finchley @3pm - for me, the game of the day in the seventh tier is this one at Champion Hill. It pits the biggest club in the division, certainly in terms of attendance, against one of its smallest. However, it was Wingate who made the play-offs last season and who are in the top four again coming into this. The Hamlet are only three points behind and anything less than a top-five finish would be an underachievement in my book. This is likely to sell out so I strongly advise you to buy tickets in advance if you do want to go

Isthmian League South Central
Kingstonian v Harrow Borough @3pm - as someone who has followed the Boro since the late '80s, it's really strange to see them challenging for a title. For most of the 30-odd years I've been supporting them, they've been grimly holding on to their coveted seventh-tier status but last season they finally lost it. However, the lower level has so far brought them a lot more joy. They're second but face a big test of their credentials on Saturday when they travel to the third placed K's. In the early years of watching Harrow, Kingstonian were a club to envy. They were the original inhabitants of Kingsmeadow (now owned by Chelsea), won the Isthmian League and went on to enjoy a top-five finish in what is now the National League. They also won the FA Trophy twice. However, since that peak in 2001 they've never come close to returning to those highs. Problems off the pitch, which I won't go into in case I get any crucial details wrong, have seen them lose Kingsmeadow and roam around various grounds in Surrey for several years. Now sharing at Raynes Park Vale, they've started the season strongly after recruiting former Walton & Hersham boss Scott Harris. Unexpectedly, he left in mid-October after falling out with the fans but returned less than a week later after reconsidering. All-in-all, this is a pretty big game and it's £10 on the gate

SSML Premier
Cockfosters v Milton Keynes Irish @3pm - in the ninth tier, Chalk Lane would appear to be the place to be on Saturday as the top two in this league go head-to-head. Locked together on 31 points, it's the hosts who need the win more as they've played two games more than their Buckinghamshire opponents. MKI finished as runners-up last season and seem well capable of going one better this time. Tickets are £10 on the gate

SCEFL Division 1
Croydon v Forest Hill Park @3pm - from the far north of London, we head next to one of its most southern clubs. With nine wins from 12, the Trams have had a great start and are two points clear at the top coming into this. FHP formed a new partnership with SE Dons over the summer and they've thrived after finishing second from bottom last season. Now third, they will go above Croydon on goal difference if they win this. Tickets are £7 on the gate
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sunday 3 November

Premier League
Tottenham Hotspur v Aston Villa @2pm - Spurs are having a really Spurs week. After the disappointment of becoming the first team to lose a league game to Crystal Palace on Sunday, they then went and knocked Manchester City out of the EFL Cup! Next up they face another challenging fixture against Villa. Last season, Unai Emery's side finished fourth and it appears it wasn't a flash in the pan as, at the time of writing, they're fourth again and top of the Champions League after three games. Last season Villa won 2-1 here but the last time they played in March in Birmingham, Tottenham won 4-0 so who knows what's going to happen here. Tickets are only available to members but hospitality packages are available from £199

Championship
Millwall v Burnley @3pm - with leaders Sunderland visiting the capital on Saturday, one of their closest challengers head to town the day after. Standing in the way of their title ambitions are Millwall who are doing quite well at the moment. With only one loss from their last seven, they're up to 10th and could well give the Clarets an uncomfortable afternoon. Tickets

FA Cup First Round
With the six preliminary and qualifying rounds now complete, the FA Cup reaches its 'proper' stage when all the clubs from League One and League Two enter the draw alongside all the remaining non-league clubs - for the latter it's often a huge day. With £45,000 going to the winners and £15,000 to the losers of each tie, the financial rewards can be transformative for some of the smaller clubs. There are two ties in London:

Sutton United v Birmingham City @1230pm - averaging crowds of 26,810, former Premier League club Birmingham top League One and are the biggest club in the draw at this stage and it's the U's who've got them. With replays scrapped this season, they may well have preferred an away draw as the gate receipts are split in the FA Cup but home advantage will give them a good shot at the prize money instead. Sutton are arguably the most famous giantkillers in the FA Cup's history with numerous wins over higher division opposition and a run to the Fifth Round in 2017. The Blues finished last season in disarray as they got relegated from the Championship but they've spent millions rebuilding and should start as strong favourites but if anyone can cause a shock it's Sutton. Amazingly it seems there's still a few tickets left
Boreham Wood v Leyton Orient @2pm - the other tie of the day isn't too bad either as another non-league side with good FA Cup pedigree welcome League One opposition. Having lost their fifth-tier status last season, the Wood had to enter the cup two rounds earlier so they've won three ties already to get this far. They face an O's side who are just above the relegation zone and struggling for form. The east London club have also been knocked out of the FA Cup by non-league opposition twice in the last five years so the chances of an upset look pretty good. Tickets

Women's Super League
Crystal Palace v Manchester City @2pm - after being heavily beaten in their first two games at this level, it looked like the Eagles were really going to struggle. However, they've managed a win and a draw since then to put them up to lower midtbale. Selhurst Park plays host on Sunday as they welcome one of the WSL's top clubs for what should be a very tough game. Tickets
Tottenham Hotspur v West Ham United @2pm - after finishing sixth and making the FA Cup final, Spurs were expected to push on this season but with only one win from five and the joint leakiest defence in the division, it's fair to say they disappointed. The Hammers finished just above the relegation zone last year so it's no surprise to find them bottom heading into this. This is being played at Leyton Orient. Tickets

Championship
Charlton Athletic v Southampton @2pm - the Addicks got off to a flyer but they're now three without a win and have surrendered top spot to Birmingham City. In a division where the margins for error are tiny, they really need to this one against the midtable Saints. This is being played at The Valley. Tickets

Women's FA Cup First Round
The 'proper' part of the Women's FA Cup takes place this weekend too. At this stage of the competition, the third tier clubs enter the draw alongside the survivors from the lower tiers who made it through the qualifying rounds. Unlike the men's, the prize money is only £6,000 for the winners and £1,500 for the losers

AFC Wimbledon v Watford @2pm - one of the ties of the round sees these two third-tier sides play each other at Plough Lane. Given there were some seventh-tier teams in the draw, this is one of the worst draws that either of them could have hoped for. The two actually played in the league of Wednesday night with the Dons edging to a narrow 1-0 away win. Tickets
Brentford v Ascot United @3pm - this tie should be incredibly interesting. As regular readers know, I'm not too enamoured of the Bees and their approach to women's football this season. Having built a team that's way too strong for the level, after their epic failure to win promotion last year, they're thrashing most of their opponents (15-0 against Richmond Park on Sunday) and celebrating every win as if they'd just beaten Chelsea (classy - not). Here they take on a club who are top of the level above them so it will be interesting to see just how good they are. Tickets will be available on the gate
Comets v Worthing @2pm - amazingly, seventh-tier club Comets have made it to this point which is a huge achievement. In the last round they beat fifth tier Wycombe Wanderers on penalties to cause quite an upset. On Sunday they play fourth-tier opposition from Sussex. Worthing managed a top-three finish in the FAWNL Division 1 South East last season but they got transferred to the South West division over the summer and aren't doing quite as well. Even so, the chances of Comets winning again are really slim. It appears this is being played at Fisher's ground in Rotherhithe but I haven't had that confirmed yet. They don't usually charge admission for their games but I think they will have to for this - expect to pay no more than £5 on arrival
Fulham v Chesham United @230pm - there's a very real chance of an upset at Motspur Park where the fifth tier Cottagers take on a side from the level above them. The hosts are one of the best sides at their level whilst the Generals are struggling in the fourth tier. On their day, Chesham have produced some fine performances this season but when things start to go against them, they tend to capitulate and have conceded six goals or more on five occasions so far this season. Tickets
London Seaward v Hackney @2pm - the hosts are having a rough time in their fourth-tier division. In the relegation zone and thrashed by fifth tier Dartford in the Isthmian Women's Cup in midweek, they'll be hoping for a bit of FA Cup respite as they host fellow east Londoners Hackney who play two levels below them. If the visitors do win, Seaward will be in real trouble. Tickets will be available on the gate - not certain of the price but I think it could be £7
Hashtag United v Wroxham @3pm - in the last tie in our area, we could see a cricket score as the Tags who top the third tier welcome a side towards the wrong end of the fifth tier. A lot will depend on how strong a side the hosts choose to field. Tickets will be available on the gate

TLFG: 21-27 October 2024

Welcome one and all to this week's TLFG.

It's really minimal at the moment as family commitments curtailed my writing time on Sunday.

So far I have match maps for the week and previews through to Friday but I'm confident you'll be able to fend for yourselves.

I'm happy to report that Liam and I completed our epic run from Fulham to Fisher - starting from home, I clocked up just over 24km so I was very happy with that but feeling it by the end.

Deciding on a club beginning with G to run to was always going to be a challenge with Glebe pretty much the only club in the pyramid which sprung to mind.

Liam and I started our run from Craven Cottage

Wonderful though they are, they play in Chislehurst and a run from Shepherd's Bush would far exceed what we achieved last week and I don't think I have it in me yet.

Amateur side Globe Rangers, based in Walthamstow, were considered before we opted for Grenfell Athletic.

Not only is Grenfell Tower nearby but the ground they use, Kings House, is by the Thames in Chiswick and makes for a good run so I'm off to meet Liam now to try and do it - check TLFG's X account later to see if we manage it.

I'm off work this week but my Mrs has lots of chores lined up so I'm not sure if there'll be any midweek action but I intend to be at Actonians' league game against London Seaward on Sunday.

Have a great week and check back for more previews as the week progresses.

THE WEEK AHEAD

The Champions League and Europa League make their return this week, alongside a busy schedule of Premier League and EFL action - interestingly, most of the top-flight games are on Sunday with four crammed in so the Tube is going to be busy!

We've also got National League matches, the next round of the FA Trophy and the Lionesses are back at Wembley to take on Germany.

As always, please make sure you check with clubs before you travel just in case a game has been called off or the venue or kick-off time has changed - this is highly possible for some of the lower non-league clubs. Also, please let me know if anything is wrong or missing.

TLFG DAILY DIGEST
In the following section, I list what are in my opinion the most notable games of the week and give some brief reasons for my choice. Check the maps above for kick-off times, ticket info and directions.

Monday 21 October

National League South
Aveley v Maidstone United @745pm - the Millers came out on top in their big relegation 'six-pointer' against Enfield Town on Saturday. The 4-2 win at Donkey Lane lifted them above St Albans City but they're still five points adrift of safety. Maidstone are the epitome of a midtable team with three wins, five draws and three defeats. One of those draws came against promotion contenders Slough Town on Saturday so they should be tough to beat. Tickets

ECL Division 1 South
Barkingside v Cannons Wood @745pm - in the bottom four and having played more games than all of those below them, it looks like being a tough season for the 'Side. The east London club have now lost nine in a row in all competitions, meaning they're are also out of the FA Vase, the ECL Cup and Essex Senior Cup. It's a very different story for the visitors who are up in fourth and scoring for fun, averaging 4.3 per game over their last six. Current form suggests a win for the away team and by a sizeable margin. Tickets are £5 on the gate

Premier League Cup
Brentford v Derby County @7pm - both of the games above are on the east side of London and could therefore be beyond you. If you're on the west side, then you might find this U21 match in Staines more to your liking. We're still at the group stage of this competition which saw the Bees lose their opening game to Chelsea 6-3. The Rams also lost their opener to Bournemouth 3-2 so they could both do with a win here. I think it's the case that you have to buy tickets online in advance so don't get caught out

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Tuesday 22 October

UEFA Youth League
Arsenal v Shakhtar Donetsk @1pm - the day begins with some U19 action at Boreham Wood's ground. The Gunners won their opening game in this competition 1-0 against PSG so you'd think they'd be confident of getting some more joy here. Entry is free

UEFA Champions League
Arsenal v Shakhtar Donetsk @8pm - in the evening it's the turn of the clubs' senior sides to do battle at the Emirates. With four points from two games, Arsenal are 13th out of 36 whilst the Ukrainians are without a win and among the group of clubs who are heading out so they could definitely do with getting something here. Tickets are only available to members but hospitality packages are available from £525

Championship
QPR v Coventry City @745pm - after losing their big game against fellow strugglers Portsmouth on Saturday, the R's slipped to the bottom of the table. On Tuesday they have another crucial game against another one of the division's strugglers. Lose again and they'll be in real trouble. Tickets

League One
Leyton Orient v Rotherham United @745pm - the O's are also continuing to struggle in the third tier. Now winless in five, the east London club are only being kept out of the relegation zone by goal difference. The visitors, freshly relegated from the Championship, aren't pulling up any trees either but they're six points ahead and have only lost one of their last five. Tickets

League Two
AFC Wimbledon v Morecambe @745pm - the Dons missed the chance to get back into the top seven by losing 1-0 to Notts County on Saturday. However, they've got a great chance to get back to winning ways as the Shrimps are bottom with only one win from 12. Tickets

National League
Dagenham & Redbridge v Eastleigh @745pm - the Daggers enjoyed a resounding 4-0 win over struggling AFC Fylde on Saturday to give their new boss Kevin Phillips a terrible start. The win leaves them just three points adrift of the play-off places. Eastleigh were top after a brilliant start but with only one win from six, they've slipped to ninth. Tickets

National League South
Welling United v Enfield Town @745pm - the match of the night in the sixth tier sees two of the bottom five clash at Park View Road. The Wings picked up a crucial win at St Albans City, who are also at the wrong end of the table, to move four points clear of the relegation zone. As mentioned above, Enfield lost to Aveley on Saturday so they really need to get something here. Tickets

Isthmian League Premier
Cray Wanderers v Whitehawk @745pm - it seems to be all about teams who are having a tough time this week as we have two of the bottom three in this seventh-tier division going head-to-head at Flamingo Park. Bottom side Cray, who are London's oldest club, are five points adrift of safety but have games in hand on all those immediately above them. Tickets

Southern League Division 1 Central
Hadley v Beaconsfield Town @745pm - the Bricks were held to a 1-1 draw at Barton Rovers on Saturday, allowing Real Bedford and Welwyn Garden City to cut the gap on the leaders to one point.
The visitors are in lower midtable and suffered the embarrassment of becoming the first team to lose to bottom club Northwood this season. For me, Hadley start as strong favourites. Tickets are available on the gate and there's a reduced rate of £5 for Premier League, EFL and National League season-ticket holders

SCEFL Premier
Holmesdale v Fisher @745pm - the hosts are in the top four despite having a negative goal difference. This is largely down to the fact that they've played several more games than anyone around them so their position is arguably a little false. The Fish are also in the top six but they too have played more than most of those around them except Holmesdale. Both need to win to keep themselves among the leading pack or they could to start to slip fairly quickly. Tickets will be available on the gate

CCL Division 1
Belstone v Bedfont @745pm - the hosts thrashed FC Deportivo Galicia 6-0 on Saturday to strengthen their grip on second place. Bedfont also picked up three points with a 1-0 win over Windsor, a result which lifted them to seventh. Tickets will be available on the gate
-------------------------------------------------------------------

Wednesday 23 October

Championship
Millwall v Plymouth Argyle @745pm - two of the bottom five meet at The Den. These clubs sit just above the relegation zone and they'll stay out of it whatever happens here as the bottom three all played on Tuesday. The Lions are unbeaten in 10 against the Pilgrims, a run which stretches back to 1998. Tickets

National League
Wealdstone v Braintree Town @745pm - now nine without a win in the league, it looks like being an important night for the Stones and their boss Matt Taylor. The former Portsmouth and West Ham player is really struggling to get a tune out of his side who sit second bottom in the league. Braintree, who are just outside the relegation zone, are the team they have to catch so a win will be huge for them. Tickets

National League South
Boreham Wood v Hornchurch @745pm - these sides were two division apart last season but a relegation and a promotion have brought them together. If the hosts win, they'll go fifth. It's a different story for the Urchins who were bumping along nicely enough in midtable but five games without a win has left them perched precariously just above the relegation zone. Tickets

Essex Senior League
Woodford Town v FC Clacton @745pm - the hosts will go top if they win here and they really should as Clacton are bottom with only one win all season. However, three points at Ashtons will lift them out of the relegation zone. Tickets will be available on the gate

ECL Division 1 South
AS London v Harlow Town @745pm - playing in Haringey, AS London have the chance to move into the top eight with victory on Wednesday. The stakes are even higher for Harlow as they'll go top if victory is theirs. Tickets will be available on the gate
------------------------------------------------------------------

Thursday 24 October

UEFA Europa League
Tottenham Hotspur v AZ Alkmaar @8pm - Spurs have opened their European campaign with two wins from two to move into the leading group. The Dutch visitors are 18th out of 36 in the qualifying league table after a win and a loss. Tickets are only available to members but hospitality packages are available from £149
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Friday 25 October

Women's international friendly
England v Germany @730pm - the Lionesses return to Wembley to play their first game there since April. It will also be the first time they've played Germany since that European Championship final which England famously won in 2022. Since then, Sarina Wiegman's side have made a World Cup final, struggled a little in the Nations League but also , most recently, qualified for Euro 2025 so will be in a position to defend their crown. Germany, on the other hand, had a bad World Cup but finished third in the Nations League, third in the Olympics and qualified with relative ease for next summer's Euros. My instinct is that the visitors are in better form but a draw seems the most likely result. Tickets

Premier League 2
Chelsea v Leicester City @7pm - if you're on a tight budget or don't want to flog all the way up to Wembley, watching the Blues' U21 side might be a better option. Being played at Kingsmeadow in Kingston, Chelsea have made a rather underwhelming start to the PL2 season with only two wins from six. The Foxes have done a little better but this should hopefully produce a well-matched midtable contest. Tickets are £7

Essex Senior League
Barking v Buckhurst Hill @745pm - the highest level non-league match of the night is this ninth-tier game in east London. The Blues are seventh but have games in hand on all of those above them so a play-off push looks highly realistic. The visitors are only two points behind in 11th but have played four more games. A home win looks like the most likely outcome. Tickets are £10 on the gate
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Saturday 26 October

Premier League
Brentford v Ipswich Town @3pm - as two of the smaller teams in the division, both should be targeting this match as one to get something out of. In reality though, the Bees should win as they are more established at this level and sitting comfortably in midtable. Eight games into the season, Ipswich are one of four teams at the bottom who have yet to win a game. Brentford have won their last three home games against the Suffolk club but this will be their first meeting at the GTech. Tickets are only available to members

Championship
Watford v Blackburn Rovers @1230pm - after a bright start, the Hornets have now lost four of their last six and they're now down to ninth. Rovers occupy the last play-off place but are only three points ahead of Watford so can be caught by the Hertfordshire club. The Lancashire side won here last season and look to have the form to do it again. Tickets

League One
Charlton Athletic v Wrexham @3pm - unbeaten in three, the Addicks will have to be at their best for the visit of their high-flying Welsh opponents. Famously owned by Hollywood star Ryan Reynolds, Wrexham came up from League Two last season and seem well capable of doing it again. Having taken a look at the records, this would appear to be the first match between the two since 1982 and on that occasion, Charlton won 1-0. Tickets

League Two
Bromley v Barrow @3pm - the Ravens recorded their first win since August on Tuesday with a superb 1-0 victory over fourth-placed Doncaster. Now five points clear of the relegation zone, they need to start building some momentum to push even further away from it. Barrow sit a point below the play-off places but with one win in six, they're not in great form. Tickets

National League
Barnet v Rochdale @3pm - the game of the day in the fifth tier sees two of the top five meet at The Hive. The Bees were top but back-to-back defeats have seen them slip to third. The visitors enjoyed a 2-1 win over Halifax in midweek to go fifth. Barnet are unbeaten in 10 home games against Rochdale, a record which goes back to 1999. Tickets

National League South
Hornchurch v Torquay United @3pm - the Urchins are now seven without a win in all competitions and are down to 20th in the league. The Gulls, on the other hand, are third after losing only two of their 12 games and could go top if they win here and other results go their way. Tickets

FA Trophy First Round
Dulwich Hamlet v Hashtag United @3pm - at this stage of the competition no new teams enter the draw so it's the remaining 64 teams from the seventh and eighth tiers facing off against each other before the sixth-tier teams enter in the next round. The Hamlet have never been beyond the quarter-finals and that stage is still a way off this time. As for the Tags, this is the first time they've made it through the qualifying rounds so they've made history already. They are, however, in the Isthmian Premier's bottom four so they'll start as underdogs here. Tickets
Hadley v Hastings United @3pm - the best chance of a shock would appear to be a Brickfield Lane where the Southern League Division 1 Central leaders welcome opposition from the level above. Having already beaten Carshalton, who are higher ranked than Hastings, it would appear they have the ability to do it again. Tickets are £10 on the gate
Hanwell Town v Hendon @3pm - we've also got this derby to look forward to. Both sides were in the Southern Premier South last season but after some league restructuring in the summer, the Greens went back to the Isthmian League. Both are hovering around midtable in their respective seventh-tier divisions so it will be interesting to see who comes out on top. Tickets
Uxbridge v Chertsey Town @3pm - there are only four ties taking place around London and this is the other one. The Reds are the lowest ranked London club left in the competition and they face tricky opposition in the form of the Curfews who play a level above them. Chertsey also made it to the FA Cup Fourth Round Qualifying and famously won the FA Vase in 2019. Tickets are £5 on the gate

CCL Premier North
North Greenford United v Berks County @3pm - it's a big day at Berkeley Fields where the hosts are celebrating their 80th anniversary. As a result they're offering free entry to everyone as they look to draw level with leaders Egham Town. They should get the points as the newly promoted visitors are struggling near the bottom of the table. Don't forget it's FREE ENTRY

CCL Premier South
AFC Whyteleafe v Knaphill @3pm - elsewhere in the ninth tier, the teams in second and third in this division meet at Church Road. The Leafe won promotion from the 10th tier last season and are on course to go up again. They're level on points with Knaphill but have played a game less so a win here will significantly strengthen their grip on second. Tickets are £8

SCEFL Division 1
Forest Hill Park v Faversham Strike Force @3pm - the hosts come into this match as leaders, just three goals ahead of Croydon who have the same amount of points. They're also the division's joint top scorers with Canterbury City but they've played two games less. FSF are fifth and could go third with a win. Tickets will be available on the gate
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sunday 27 October

Premier League
Chelsea v Newcastle United @2pm - there's a packed programme of top-flight football on Sunday with a whopping four games. The Blues are seventh in the league and ticking over pretty nicely with only two defeats so far. They also come into this on the back of a comfortable 4-1 Conference League win over Panathinaikos in Athens. The Magpies are winless in four and down to ninth and it's also 12 years since they last won at Stamford Bridge. Tickets have sold out but hospitality packages are available from £400
Crystal Palace v Tottenham Hotspur @2pm - after losing at Nottingham Forest on Monday night, the Eagles must know they're in some trouble. In the bottom three and winless in eight it's not looking good. Spurs come into this on the back of wins over West Ham and AZ Alkmaar and they're now the Premier League's second highest goal scorers - an away win looks likely. Tickets are only available to members
West Ham United v Manchester United @2pm - the Hammers suffered a 4-1 humbling at Spurs last week to slip to 15th. However, the Red Devils are just a win ahead of them and far from their best. The hosts should be better rested than the visitors who were in Istanbul drawing with Fenerbahce in the Europa League on Thursday. West Ham have also won their last two against Man Utd at the London Stadium so we could end up with a draw here. Tickets
Arsenal v Liverpool @430pm - as usual, the biggest game of the week comes right at the end as two of the giants of English football meet at the Emirates. The Gunners' title bid received a setback last time out as they lost at Bournemouth, ending the match with 10 men again. The result left them four points behind leaders Liverpool who won their big game against Chelsea. The Reds have won four of their last six games at this stadium and Arsenal will do well to beat them. Tickets are only available to members

FAWNL Plate Second Round
AFC Wimbledon v Southampton Academy @2pm - after seeing the original tie in Hampshire postponed last weekend, the sides have agreed to switch venues and have another go at Plough Lane. The winners will host Norwich City in the next round. Tickets

FAWNL Division 1 South East
Actonians v London Seaward @2pm - after a couple of weeks of cup football, the A's return to league action against the other independent women's side in the division. The hosts have started superbly and are second after only one defeat which came in their last league match at Dulwich Hamlet. East London club Seaward are in the relegation zone after managing only one win all season. However, they have a habit of causing Actonians a few issues at Rectory Park, earning draws on their last two visits after being two goals adrift. Tickets are £5 in advance or on the gate
London Bees v Norwich City @2pm - after an iffy start, the hosts are now building up quite a head of steam. Unbeaten in five, they've scored 10 goals in their last two games. On Sunday they welcome the league leaders so they'll need to be at their best. The Canaries were seen by many to be favourites to win the title and although they're top, they're by no means running away with it after drawing their last three games. Tickets
QPR v Dulwich Hamlet @2pm - after getting thrashed by local rivals Actonians at the start of September, the R's went on a six-game unbeaten run. Then they ran into Watford, another local rival, who thrashed them 6-1 in the FAWNL Cup last Sunday. To be fair, the Hornets play a level above them and Rangers didn't have a recognised goalkeeper available. Dulwich are new to the division and doing well. Up to third, they either win or they lose - they don't do draws. This is being played at Hayes & Yeading United and tickets will be available on the gate for £5

TLFG: 14-20 October 2024

Welcome one and all to this week's TLFG.

As I write this, it's Monday morning, it's raining steadily outside and I'm about to meet up with blog reader Liam B to go on the latest of my A-Z of football club runs.

Today we're doing F and rather than just run to Fulham which is local to both of us, we've decided to meet at Craven Cottage and then attempt to run along the river to Fisher who play in Rotherhithe.

I'm not certain of the mileage but he's capable of ultramarathon distance and I did my half two weeks ago so let's see what happens.

Back on the football-watching front, I managed two games last week.

Tenth-tier club Croydon are continuing their community outreach efforts

First up I went to Loftus Road on Tuesday to see QPR U21s narrowly lose 1-0 to their counterparts from Bristol City in what was a pretty entertaining game.

Then on Sunday, I made my first visit to Rectory Park since February to see Actonians play Dartford in their crucial Women's FA Cup Third Round Qualifying match.

I say crucial because the prize money on offer is substantial and makes a huge difference to clubs, particularly independent women's ones like the A's.

Sunday's tie was worth £4,000 to the winners and Dartford, from the division below, stood in the way.

The gap between the fourth tier and decent fifth tier sides like the Darts is small and they appear to be clearly well resourced, turning up with enough subs and support staff to fill two benches.

The Kent club were a big, physical side who asserted themselves well and saw a goal ruled out for offside shortly before Actonians took the lead.

Jennie Brereton's ball into the box found the onrushing Dior Knorr who rounded the keeper and finished well.

The teenage striker who joined in the summer has been a revelation and is well clear in the race for the club's golden boot already.

Thereafter it was pretty much Dartford who dominated things.

German goalkeeper Elisa Dogor, who got hitched on Saturday, pulled off some fine saves to keep them out before Knorr scored a second with 12 minutes to got after a fine through ball from Kat Turner.

This visibly lifted the pressure and although around nine minutes of time were added on at the end, Actonians held on for the win and the money.

Right, I've got to get myself to Craven Cottage - have a great week.

THE WEEK AHEAD

With the international break now over, we've got a full Premier League and EFL programme to look forward to.

Aside from that, we also have games in the Women's Champions League, National League, Isthmian League, Southern League and a load of ties in the First Round of the FA Vase.

On Sunday there are a few men's non-league games but it's mainly about women's football with the WSL and FAWNL League Cup taking centre stage.

MIDWEEK MATCH MAP
Monday fixtures - yellow pin
Tuesday fixtures - green pin
Wednesday fixtures - turquoise pin
Thursday fixtures - purple pin
Friday fixtures - black pin

WEEKEND MATCH MAP
Saturday fixtures - blue pin
Sunday fixtures - orange pin

TLFG DAILY DIGEST
In the following section, I list what are in my opinion the most notable games of the week and give some brief reasons for my choice. Check the maps above for kick-off times, ticket info and directions.

Monday 14 October

Middlesex Premier Cup First Round
Hillingdon Borough v CB Hounslow & Abbots @730pm - the hosts don't get mentioned in here all that often, largely because they've had a pretty lean last few years. Finishing in the CCL Division 1's bottom four in two of the last three seasons, there hasn't been much to shout about. This year has seen a much brighter start, currently seventh and with games in hand on most of those above them, things look promising. On Monday, they play a side from the level below them in the opening round of this cup competition and should start as favourites

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Tuesday 15 October

Professional Development League
Charlton Athletic v Ipswich Town @1pm - this lunchtime U21 game ensures the possibility of being able to do a 'double' on Tuesday. Being played at Dartford's ground, you'll have more than enough time to get to second match later in the day. As for this game, the Addicks are currently top of Group South in this league, whilst Ipswich are five points behind in fourth. Tickets should be available on the gate for no more than £5

Kent Senior Cup Second Round
Bromley v Dartford @745pm - when I started writing this blog in the 2011/12 season, these two were both in the sixth tier and enjoying some decent derby games. Thirteen years later, three divisions now separate them following two promotions for the Ravens and one relegation for the Darts. Now in the EFL, it's good to see Bromley still entering this competition and hosting games. On paper they should win but I'd expect a fair few youngsters to be given a go which should even things up a bit. Tickets

Southern League Premier South
Walton & Hersham v Gosport Borough @745pm - fourth and with a game in hand on the top three, the Swans are the top TLFG club in this in this seventh-tier division. On Tuesday they welcome a Gosport side who are towards the wrong end of the division but have a couple of games in hand after a fine run in the FA Cup. Sadly that run came to an end at Wealdstone on Saturday but they'll hope to now refocus and get on with the task of climbing the table. Tickets will be available on the gate for £12

London Senior Cup Second Round
Harrow Borough v QPR U21 @745pm - it's a big night at Earlsmead and at TLFG Towers where my favourite non-league and pro clubs meet in a competitive game. Harrow required an injury-time equaliser to earn a 2-2 draw against Leatherhead on Saturday, a result which kept them second in the Isthmian South Central. The R's U21 side have been shambolic at times this season but also quite hard to predict. Over the course of a week last month, they lost 6-0 to Sheffield United on the Tuesday, won 7-0 against Preston on the Friday and lost 6-0 to Burnley the following Tuesday. Things have become a bit steadier since then but it's hard to know what kind of side is going to turn up. Tickets are £10 on the gate

Middlesex Senior Cup
Northwood v Brentford U21 @745pm - bar one drawn game, the hosts have lost every match they've played so far this season so it's unsurprising to see them bottom of their eighth-tier division and on the hunt for a new manager. On Tuesday they welcome a young Bees side who take this competition very seriously. They've made two of the last four finals, winning one and losing the other on penalties. It could be another tough night for the Southern League club. Tickets are £10 on the gate

Isthmian League South Central
Raynes Park Vale v Farnham Town @745pm - Tuesday also gives you a chance to take a look at the mighty Farnham who already look set to achieve another promotion after running away with the CCL Premier South last season. Top of this eighth-tier division and having already thrashed second-placed Harrow, they next take their unbeaten record to Grand Drive. RPV finished just short of a play-off spot last season but they're up in the top six again and should be able to pose the leaders a few challenging questions. Tickets are £10 on the gate

--------------------------------------------------------------

Wednesday 16 October

UEFA Women's Champions League
Arsenal v Valerenga @8pm - Gunners boss Jonas Eidevall has just had a week to forget. A 0-0 draw at home to struggling Everton followed by losses to Bayern Munich and biggest rivals Chelsea has left them in some difficulty. On Wednesday they welcome one of Norway's top clubs to the Emirates for what can only be described as a must-win game. Valerenga are well clear at the summit of the Toppserien but did lose 1-0 to Juventus in their last Champions League game last week. Tickets

Essex Senior League
Woodford Town v White Ensign @745pm - if you'd prefer a men's game instead then I'd recommend a trip to north-east London where the hosts will look to win one of their games in hand and go top of the division. Woodford lost out in the play-offs last season and will hope to go one better this time. White Ensign, who hail from Southend, are in midtable and should be beaten

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thursday 17 October

L&SE Women's League D1 North
Clapton CFC v Hackney @745pm - the pick of the action on Thursday takes place at the Old Spotted Dog which is the oldest football ground in London. It's also an east London derby so should be well worth a watch. Likely to be the last game under lights at this venue before the end of the year, CCFC usually draw excellent crowds for this level so there should be a decent atmosphere. The merchandise stall is also well worth a visit too. Suggested entry to women's games is £5 but there's a concessionary 'Pay What You Want' offer for a large group of people including local residents, trade union members, the unemployed and refugees - have a look at the full list to see if you qualify
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Friday 18 October

Premier League International Cup
Crystal Palace v Sporting Lisbon @7pm - get your weekend underway by watching some of Europe's up-and-coming talent at Selhurst Park in this U21 game. The Eagles won this competition last year and made the final the year before that. They began the defence of their title with a draw against Real Sociedad in their opening group game so they'll hope for a win here. This will be Sporting's first game of their campaign. Tickets

Essex Senior League Cup
Romford v Stanway Rovers @745pm - there are also several non-league games on Friday with this the best of what's on offer. The hosts had a great season last year which saw them make the play-offs and win the FA Vase at Wembley. The top of the ESL is really tight at the moment with only three points between first and fifth. Romford and Stanway are both in this leading group so we could have quite a match on our hands here. This match is being played at Barking and tickets will be available on the gate for £8

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Saturday 19 October

Premier League
Tottenham Hotspur v West Ham United @1230pm - we've got a London derby to kick things off at lunchtime on Saturday. Sitting a couple of points apart in midtable, it's fair to say that these sides have made a bit of an underwhelming start. Sitting ninth, eight points behind leaders Liverpool, Spurs will probably feel the more disappointed as their expectations would no doubt have been higher. Their last match before the international break saw them throw away a 2-0 lead before losing 3-2 to Brighton and they'll desperately want to improve on that. The Hammers thrashed newly promoted Ipswich 4-1 in their last match but it was only their second win and they'll want to start building some momentum. Tickets are only available to members but hospitality packages are available from £199
Fulham v Aston Villa @3pm - in terms of league placings, this is actually a better looking match than the derby above as both are in the top eight. The Cottagers are playing some good stuff under Marco Silva and a starting to re-establish themselves in the Premier League after several years of yo-yoing between the divisions. Villa finished in the top four last season, famously beat Bayern Munich in the Champions League a couple of weeks ago and are pushing for a high finish again. They've also won five of their last six league games against Fulham so will start as favourites for me. Tickets appear to have sold out but you can still enquire about hospitality packages

Championship
Millwall v Derby County @3pm - if you can't get into either of the above, then the second tier could well provide your entertainment on Saturday. The Lions avoided relegation last season but still finished in the bottom half of the table. Sadly, not a lot has improved and they're down there again. Given how big some of the clubs in the Championship are, 18th out of 24 isn't a disaster by any means and as long as they pick up the odd win every few weeks, then they'll be fine. The Rams are newly promoted from League One but have a much more illustrious history having been crowned English champions twice in the '70s and last playing in the Premier League in 2008. In the top half, they're holding their own and should be capable of at least a draw. Tickets
QPR v Portsmouth @3pm - for me, there's a bigger game at Loftus Road where two of the bottom three meet in this early season 'six-pointer'. Since suffering relegation from the Premier League in 2015, the R's have showed little sign of returning, with 14th being their average finishing position over the last 10 years. The last two seasons have seen them come dangerously close to relegation and this season looks like being tough again. Pompey were a Premier League side between 2003-2010 and won the FA Cup in 2008. Sadly it came at a huge cost as the club's finances fell apart and within three years they were in League Two. Now back in the second tier for the first time since 2012, they're getting great crowds at Fratton Park but they're struggling to adapt on the pitch and they're the only side in the division who have yet to win a game. A look at the record books also shows the Hampshire club haven't won a league game in W12 since 1961 so now would be a great time to end that run. Tickets

League One
Charlton Athletic v Stockport County @3pm - two of the third tier's top eight meet at The Valley in an intriguing looking game. The Addicks made a great start but then three straight defeats saw them start to slide. Thankfully they ended that run before the international break with a superb 1-0 win over top club Birmingham City who were unbeaten at that point. They're now level on points with sixth-placed Stockport. With only one defeat themselves, you'd expect the Mancunian club would be higher up but they've drawn four of their last six games. Tickets

League Two
Bromley v Tranmere Rovers @3pm - Hayes Lane plays host to another important match at the wrong end of the table, with both clubs in the bottom six. The Ravens got off to a promising start but now haven't won a league game since August. Like Millwall, things aren't desperate as they're drawing a lot of games and just about keeping their heads above water. The visitors are only a point above them and having a very similar season. These sides met six times before Covid when they were both in the National League and Tranmere won five and drew one so their record against the south London club is pretty excellent. Tickets

National League
Sutton United v Oldham Athletic @3pm - I often try to write previews for all fifth-tier games but I'm pushed for time so will only do one. The biggest game of the day at this level sees a former EFL club welcome one of the clubs who competed in the inaugural season of the Premier League. The U's edged past Southern League club Chertsey Town in the FA Cup last weekend to book a mouthwatering home tie with Birmingham City. Now back on league duty, they could get themselves back into the play-off places if they can beat the Latics who are a top-six club themselves. Tickets

National League South
Enfield Town v Aveley @3pm - in the sixth tier there's another big game between early-season strugglers. The Towners are playing at this level for the first time since their formation in 2001 but have found things tough since winning the Isthmian League play-offs. Aveley went up the year before and made the NLS play-offs last season but didn't go up again - if they had, it would've been their third consecutive promotion. This season their form has tailed off sharply and they've managed only one win from their 11 games so far. Tickets

Isthmian League Premier
Dulwich Hamlet v Billericay Town @3pm - TLFG reader Liam B, mentioned above, got turned away from Champion Hill last week as the Hamlet sold out against Hastings. This Saturday they face another big game as the team in third pay a visit from Essex. Dulwich are fifth so this game shows real potential. To make sure you don't end up like Liam, buy your tickets in advance

Isthmian League South Central
Hanworth Villa v Harrow Borough @3pm - it's a case of fifth versus second at Rectory Meadow. After winning the CCL Premier North in 2021/22, the hosts have enjoyed two good seasons in the eighth tier, finishing fourth and seventh. This season has seen them start in similar form and on Saturday they'll have a great chance to prove just how good they are. If you put aside a number of reprieves, Boro suffered their first relegation in decades last season but seem to have found their level after regularly struggling in the seventh tier. With a whole new management team and very different squad in place, they've only lost once and beat QPR U21s on penalties in the London Senior Cup on Tuesday night. Tickets are £11 on the gate - cash or card

FA Vase First Round
This national knockout competition for clubs in the ninth and tenth tiers, with its final at Wembley. has reached its 'proper' stage. There are numerous ties around the capital. Here are my top three:

AFC Whyteleafe v Saltdean United @3pm - fans of the Leafe have had an eventful few years. In 2021 they were supporting an Isthmian League club but then they suddenly folded over problems with the lease at their Church Road ground. They reformed almost immediately as AFC Whyteleafe and have climbed back up to the ninth tier in quick time. Now second in the CCL Premier South, they're well set for getting back to the level they folded at. Saltdean are in the parallel SCFL Premier but are in the bottom three and should be beaten. Tickets will be available on the gate for £8
Egham Town v Colliers Wood United @3pm - Jordan Berry did a great job with the Sarnies a couple of seasons ago and got headhunted by Harrow Borough. The jump of two divisions proved to be too much and the young manager is now back at the Runnymede Stadium where he's guided his side to the top of the CCL Premier North. On Saturday they'll start as strong favourites against CWU who play a level below them after getting relegated last season. I've got a really good feeling about Egham's chances in the Vase this season and fancy them to at least match their best of getting to the Fourth Round. Tickets will be available on the gate, I'm not sure of the price but it shouldn't exceed £10
VCD Athletic v Roffey @3pm - in south-east London we're lucky enough to have another one of the ninth tier's hottest teams. The Vickers are currently top of the SCEFL with 10 wins, two draws and no defeats from their 12 games so far. Like Saltdean, Sussex club Roffey play in the SCFL but are in midtable. They enjoyed their best run in the Vase last season, making the Third Round, but they'll do really well to get through this tie. Tickets are £10 on the gate

SCEFL Division 1
Croydon v Greenways @3pm - if you'd like a 10th-tier option, head south to watch the Trams who continue their push for promotion. The title race in this division is incredibly tight at the moment with only three points separating the top six. Croydon are currently level on points with leaders Forest Hill Park and have a great chance of going clear at the top if they win this match against midtable opposition. The hosts are once again looking to bring local people in and are hoping to capitalise on the lack of a Crystal Palace match taking place on their doorstep. They've given out hundreds of free tickets to local school children so they'll be hoping for a decent crowd. Tickets for adults will be available on the gate - I'm not sure of the price but it shouldn't exceed £10
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sunday 20 October

Isthmian League South Central
Ashford Town (Middlesex) v Metropolitan Police @3pm - with the Tangerines' ground shut for the laying of a new 3G pitch, they've been playing matches at different grounds this season. Most recently they've been playing at Cobham and in order to get use of their facilities again, they've had to wait until Sunday. With both sides in the bottom five, it's a big game for both. Tickets are £10 on the gate

FA Vase First Round
Epsom & Ewell v Berks County @3pm - the Salts are groundsharing at Corinthian Casuals this season, hence the Sunday playing of this fixture. They play in the ninth tier CCL Premier South and here they take on a side who are in the relegation zone of the parallel CCL Premier North. Unusually, Berks County lost the CCL Division 1 play-off final to British Airways last season but were still granted promotion after some clubs in the higher tier couldn't be reprieved

Women's Super League
West Ham United v Arsenal @3pm - the Hammers struggled last season and have yet to impress in the early stages of this campaign either. Winless in four, they're second from bottom. The Gunners have had a big week, parting ways with boss Jonas Eidevall after a very disappointing start. With him gone, they then thrashed Valerenga 4-1 in the Champions League. On paper they should definitely win here but we thought that last year too and they lost. This is being played at Dagenham & Redbridge. Tickets
Chelsea v Tottenham Hotspur @645pm - in the late game, the reigning WSL champions will look to extend their 100% record and keep the pressure on early leaders Manchester City who have played a game more. Spurs made the top six and got to the FA Cup Final last season, making it their most successful to date. However, with one win from four, they've been a bit disappointing in the first month of this campaign. The Blues will start as strong favourites. If you've got a ticket for this then you can easily do a double and combine it with either of the men's games above as they're both on this side of town. Tickets are available for this but games at Kingsmeadow often reach capacity so don't delay buying one if you do want to go

FAWNL Cup Second Round
Watford v QPR @2pm - in Ruislip we have this derby at Wealdstone's ground. The R's have done really well to get this far having beaten third tier AFC Wimbledon and Swindon Town who are one of the best sides at the level they play at. In this game they face another third-tier side who have just come down from the Championship and have this week announced investment from Hollywood (with Scrubs actress Judy Reyes being the most recognisable face involved). The Hornets should win but a lot will depend on the strength of the side they field - like in the men's game, youngsters often get a chance in League Cup games. Tickets
