TLFG: 16-22 September 2024

Greetings everyone and welcome to the latest edition of TLFG.

How has your week been?

Unbelievably, I made it to three games over the last few days and ticked off a new ground in the process.

The first was on Tuesday lunchtime when I headed to Loftus Road to watch a very young QPR side get thrashed 6-0 by Sheffield United in a development match.

Then on Wednesday night I made the short journey to the Quintin Hogg Memorial Ground in Chiswick to see Actonians Reserves take on Richmond & Kew in a London & South East Women's Regional League game.

Despite making a disappointing start to the campaign following promotion, R&K had a great evening and opened up a 2-0 half-time lead.

A few promising moves came to nothing for the A's before a thunderous effort nearly took the net out to give the hosts a 3-0 win.

Actonians' American captain Mara Bramwell makes her presence felt against Abingdon United

It was the first cold night of the autumn and a jumper and coat were definitely in order.

Located on the north bank of the Thames by Chiswick Bridge, the QHMG is a fine modern 3G facility which is so new it doesn't exist on Google Maps.

It's quite similar to Rectory Park but doesn't have any covered seating and I don't think there were any refreshments available which I think renders it of no use in the Women's National League and the top six levels of men's non-league football.

It is, however, absolutely fine for Step 7 and below with Surrey Premier County side AFC Cubo currently using it as their home ground.

Today (Sunday), I returned to watching the first team but instead of heading to the aforementioned Rectory Park, my daughter and I went to Bedfont Sports as I presume the former was already booked up.

Located very close to the runway at Heathrow, this ground is famous for fans being able to watch football and airliners at the same time and my five-year-old was pretty thrilled by the experience - particularly on the walk back to Hatton Cross as they fly right over your head!

Today's opponents were Abingdon United, who play in a parallel fourth-tier division to Actonians, in the Preliminary Round of the Women's National League Plate.

Even with several senior players rested, it was apparent that the A's have a good young squad this year and they were at it from the off.

Numerous chances came and went before Ikraam Mohamed prodded home from a corner on 26 minutes before Khyri McKenzie doubled the lead two minutes later.

Mohamed was on target again shortly before the hour after a bad mix-up in the visitors' defence and that was it.

Many more chances came and went but it ended 3-0 and they now travel to Chatham Town in the next round in two weeks.

So what have you been up to?

I'm going on to early shifts at work tomorrow so my chances of seeing any games this week look slim but you never know.

Lastly this week, many thanks to Chris from Germany for donating to TLFG's coffee-drinking fund. I really, really appreciate it.

THE WEEK AHEAD

Over the next few days we've got games in the Premier League, EFL, EFL Cup, National League, FA Trophy, FA Vase and FA Youth Cup on the male side.

The Women's Super League gets underway this week, the Championship continues and as well as National League games, we've also got the next round of the Women's FA Cup too.

As always, please make sure you check with clubs before you travel just in case a game has been called off or the venue or kick-off time has changed - this is highly possible for some of the lower non-league clubs. Also, please let me know if anything is wrong or missing.

Details on all of this week's games can be found on the following match maps. If you've never used them before, please note that when there is more than one match at a specific ground you'll only be able to see individual match pins if you zoom right in. If you don't, the pins obscure each other and you might miss them. To avoid this, you can also scroll down the list of games on the drop down menu at the top of the map page to make sure you get all the information. Games are listed from top to bottom in date order so Monday's games (yellow pin) will appear first and Sunday's (orange pin) last. Games are also ranked in terms of status so the higher the division, the higher up the list they will appear on each day.
Also if you're unfamiliar with the English league structure I indicate the level at which an individual league sits in the national 'pyramid' with the Premier League at the top (Level 1) and various minor leagues at the bottom (Level 10). Typically a top level game will see crowds of anywhere between 20,000-60,000. These figures will gradually decline as you go down the leagues until you get to Levels 8-10 where attendances of 150 or less are most common.

It should also be noted that the top four levels are for fully professional teams. Level 5 has a mixture of professional and semi-professional teams, while Levels 6-10 will see most players paid but it will vary from no more than travel expenses at the bottom, right up to several hundred pounds a week at the top.

TLFG DAILY DIGEST
In the following section, I list what are in my opinion the most notable games of the week and give some brief reasons for my choice. Check the maps above for kick-off times, ticket info and directions.

Monday 16 September

Essex Senior League
Ilford v Romford @745pm - the Foxes are having issues hosting games at Cricklefield and have therefore played all of their five fixtures away from home. It is for this reason that this game has been moved to Redbridge's home at Oakside. With all the travelling, they've only managed to pick up three points and are in the relegation zone. The visitors have had a much better start, sit fourth and should be favourites going into this derby. Tickets will be available on the gate

FA Youth Cup First Qualifying Round
The next round of the country's most prestigious U18 competition gets underway this week and there are ties every day except Saturday. On Monday, the local derby between Dartford and Erith Town would be my pick of the games

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Tuesday 17 September

EFL Cup Third Round
Brentford v Leyton Orient @745pm - after narrowly losing to Manchester City in the Premier League on Saturday, the Bees return to League Cup action on Tuesday night. They've drawn League One strugglers and fellow Londoners Orient who have only won one league game this season. Although starting very much as second favourites, the O's managed to cause an upset in the last round by beating the higher-ranked Millwall but this presents a significantly harder challenge. Games like this present groundhoppers and casual football watchers with a rare chance to watch a game at the often sold out GTech so don't miss your chance to get tickets
QPR v Crystal Palace @745pm - just up the road in Shepherds Bush, the R's will be looking to pick up a notable scalp in another London derby. These sides were very similar size clubs for many years but the Eagles have now established themselves in the top flight whilst QPR have become a staple of the Championship. For many Rangers fans, this is all about the return of former star Eberechi Eze who moved to Palace four years ago and he's likely to receive a warm reception. In terms of club honours, the League Cup represents QPR's greatest ever triumph. They won it by beating West Brom in 1967 and also made the final in 1986. Palace have never won it but they put out a very strong side in the last round and it's believed they could be taking it very seriously this year. Tickets

Premier League International Cup
Crystal Palace v Real Sociedad @7pm - in an unfortunate bit of scheduling, the Eagles' U21 side are also playing the same night. This competition sees young sides from the Premier League and around Europe first compete in a group stage before moving on to the knockout rounds. All matches are played in England. Palace are the reigning champions and were runners-up the season before that. The visitors play in the third tier in Spain and are making their debut in the competition this season. This match is being played at Sutton United and tickets are available

FA Cup Second Round Qualifying Replays
Wingate & Finchley v Cray Wanderers @745pm - after fighting out a 1-1 draw at Flamingo Park on Saturday lunchtime, these two Isthmian Premier sides will have to do it all again. There's little to choose between them in the league at the moment so it could well go to penalties. Neither side have made it beyond the qualifying rounds before and with the draw for the next round on Monday, they should know who they'll be playing if they progress. Tickets
Barking v Gorleston @745pm - the ninth-tier Blues are the lowest-ranked London club left in this season's FA Cup after a 2-2 draw in Norfolk. It could've been so much better for Jonny Fowell's side as they were 2-0 up but sadly couldn't hold on. The visitors play a level above them in the Isthmian North so beating them will definitely represent an upset. Tickets are £10 on the gate

Isthmian League South East
Beckenham Town v Margate @745pm - it seems the Becks are going through a weird cycle of boom and bust in recent years. Two seasons ago they pushed for the title and last season they were so bad, they required a reprieve to stay up. The 2024/25 campaign has got off to another flyer and they're top. Unbeaten after six matches, they next face a Margate side who were relegated from the Isthmian Premier last season and who arrive on the back of a resounding 4-0 win at Bognor in the FA Cup. Tickets will be available on the gate

CCL Premier North
Egham Town v Amersham Town @745pm - with boss Jordan Berry back from his stint at Harrow Borough, the Sarnies have made a solid start. Currently fourth in this ninth-tier division, they look set to challenge for a play-off place as they did the last time he was in charge. On Tuesday, they face a visit from a team who are riding the crest of a wave. Amersham romped to the CCL Division 1 title last season and have started well again. They're only eighth at the moment because they've played fewer games than everyone else as a result of the sensational FA Cup run they're also on. Saturday saw them beat Isthmian League club Burgess Hill Town in Sussex as they achieved their best ever performance in the competition. Tickets will be available on the gate

CCL Division 1
London Samurai Rovers v Windsor & Eton @745pm - Tuesday night gives you the chance to take a look at another side who've made an impressive start. Playing at this level for the first time since re-forming in 2023, the visitors are really making people sit up and take notice. With 10 wins from 11 games, the Berkshire club are four points clear at the top already. LSR, on the other hand, are winless in 10 and really struggling - there looks like being only one winner. This match is being played at Hanworth Villa and tickets will be available on the gate

--------------------------------------------------------------

Wednesday 18 September

SSML Premier
London Lions v Colney Heath @8pm - the highest level game on offer on Wednesday is this rather unremarkable ninth-tier match at Rowley Lane. The hosts are going along well enough in eighth whilst the visitors, who hail from the outskirts of St Albans, are in 10th. Tickets will be available on the gate

CCL Division 1
Staines & Lammas (Middlesex) v Westside @745pm - clubs in TLFG's catchment area have made a bright start, filling six of the current top 10 positions in this 10th-tier division. The hosts have just enjoyed promotion from the SPCFL and are more than holding their own in that group. Westside are also up there so this should produce an evenly-matched contest. This is being played at Abbey Rangers and tickets will be available on the gate

SPCFL Premier
Dial Square v Addlestone @745pm - talking of the SPCFL, the hosts are now up to the 11th tier and well worth keeping an eye on. Dial Square was the name originally used by Arsenal and this club was formed in 2020 by a Gunners fan who was disillusioned with the way Stan Kroenke was running them. They play just down the road from Abbey Rangers (mentioned above) at Chertsey Town's ground and this match sees them play Addlestone in a derby. Tickets are £5 on the gate

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thursday 19 September

FA Youth Cup First Round Qualifying
Today is all about matches in this U18 competition. There are three games spread around the capital but it's the one between Barking and Ware which most interests me. The Blues had a superb run in this last season and went all the way to the Third Round where they took Millwall to extra-time at The Den before losing 5-3. They've still got to win many more matches just to equal that run but it would be great to see them get close again. Tickets will be available on the gate
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Friday 20 September

Women's Super League
Chelsea v Aston Villa @7pm - the WSL gets underway on Friday night with this match at Kingsmeadow. The Blues won the title again last year but they're having to begin this campaign without the legendary Emma Hayes at the helm. She's been replaced by French coach Sonia Bompastor who won pretty much everything with Lyon as a player and manager. They've brought in a number of new players too including Lioness Lucy Bronze who's likely to make her debut here. Villa finished a disappointing seventh last season and they've brought in a Lioness of their own in the form of Katie Robinson. They also spent £250,000 on Brazilian striker Gabi Nunes to give them a bit more firepower. Adult tickets are £16 and there are only a few left

Professional Development League
Watford v Charlton Athletic @1pm - if you're also around earlier in the day then you've got the chance to see this U21 game too. It's being played at Vicarage Road so it's a great chance to get that groundhopper tick on the cheap if you've never been. I haven't seen any ticket details yet but it shouldn't be more than £5 - check on the day for all the latest info

FA Vase Second Round Qualifying
Enfield Borough v Frenford @745pm - the next round of this national knockout competition for clubs in the ninth and tenth tiers gets underway on Friday. The hosts play a level below Frenford so will do well to win. Both sides are fairly new to the Vase but both have previously made it as far as the Second Round proper. This match is being played at Wingate & Finchley and tickets will be available on the gate

TLFG: 9-15 September 2024

Welcome one and all to this week's TLFG.

I'm going to begin by saying I think I'm actually shaking a little bit with excitement after Actonians recorded a spectacular 4-0 win over QPR in the women's West London Derby.

As someone who lives in Shepherd's Bush and has supported QPR's men's team for over 40 years - this afternoon has left feeling a bit like Declan Rice.

Sadly I couldn't go - I'm at work until after 11pm and I'm writing this on my break.

With former A's boss Danny Harrigan returning as the new R's manager, there was even more anticipation than normal.

Millwall host Luton in a spicy looking game on Saturday - tickets

Although Actonians had made a stronger start to the season than QPR, I would never have foreseen a result like this.

New golden girl Dior Knorr set the tone with an early goal, her fourth in four appearances, and it seemed to go downhill for the visitors from there.

Further strikes from Amber Dredge, Amina Hanif and Merle Redhead-Ling followed at regular intervals as Oliver Yazdi's side cruised to victory.

I'm still in awe at what Linda Fox and the team of volunteers at the club have achieved over the years and the shrewd appointment of Yazdi and a whole new coaching team seems to be paying dividends.

Now joint second in their fourth-tier division surrounded by teams who spend considerable sums financing their squads, Actonians really deserve a closer look.

For me, as a fan, the first priority is for the team to do enough to stay up as other clubs' resources completely dwarf what we have available.

And guess what? With 10 points from the first four games, we've already exceeded what the relegated teams accrued over the whole of last season!

Anyway, it's incredibly early days and all could still go spectacularly wrong, but just let me have this moment please.

Lastly this week, many thanks to Noel L from Norfolk and Martin B from Dorset for donating to TLFG's coffee-drinking fund. I really, really appreciate it.

THE WEEK AHEAD

Over the next few days we've got international football at Wembley, the Premier League returns and there's a full programme of EFL and National League games.

Lower down the pyramid we've got the next round of the FA Cup and at youth level there are some eye-catching U21 and U18 games.

In the women's game, some matches in the FAWNL Plate top the bill.

As always, please make sure you check with clubs before you travel just in case a game has been called off or the venue or kick-off time has changed - this is highly possible for some of the lower non-league clubs. Also, please let me know if anything is wrong or missing.

TLFG DAILY DIGEST
In the following section, I list what are in my opinion the most notable games of the week and give some brief reasons for my choice. Check the maps above for kick-off times, ticket info and directions.

Monday 9 September

Isthmian League North
Redbridge v Haringey Borough @745pm - just over 48 hours since their last meeting in an FA Trophy tie, these two will do it all over again in the league. Despite losing all of their league games, the visitors won that match on Saturday 3-1 and are still going strong in the FA Cup. With two wins from four, the Motormen are doing okay but they'll need to quickly improve their performance to avoid another defeat here. Tickets are £10 on the gate

SCEFL Division 1
SC Thamesmead v SOUL Tower Hamlets @745pm - the hosts have only won once this season and sit in lower midtable as a result. The visitors got transferred from the ECL over the summer and are a win away from a place in the top five. Tickets are £8 on the gate

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Tuesday 10 September

UEFA Nations League
England v Finland @745pm - the Three Lions began life under interim boss Lee Carsley by winning 2-0 in Dublin against Ireland on Saturday. The performance impressed many so it will be interesting to see how they fare against the Finns at Wembley. Markku Kanerva's side made a disappointing start in their first group match, losing 3-0 to Greece. Tickets

Professional Development League
There are a couple of U21 games at lunchtime on Tuesday which means you can easily see two games today. QPR face Sheffield United whilst Charlton Athletic entertain Crewe Alexandra. With the former being played at Loftus Road at 1pm, it would seem to be the ideal choice if you're heading to Wembley later in the evening - entry is usually by donation

National League
Barnet v Altrincham @745pm - in a strange bit of scheduling we also have this fifth-tier match in north-west London, just a few stops up the line from Wembley. The Bees travelled to the north-east to play leaders Gateshead in one of the biggest games on Saturday but lost 2-0 to miss the chance to go third. Still in the play-off places, they should start as marginal favourites against Alty although they recorded a handsome 4-0 win over Ebbsfleet United in their last game. Tickets
Dagenham & Redbridge v Sutton United @745pm - with only one win from seven games this season, the Daggers have made an underwhelming start. However, they're only two points behind the U's whose early form has deserted them. On Saturday, they lost 3-0 at home to Boston United to extend their winless run to four games. Tickets

Southern League Premier South
Walton & Hersham v Hanwell Town @745pm - the Swans made the long journey down to Devon to play Plymouth Parkway on Saturday and came back with all three points after a 2-1 win. The result also put them top of this seventh-tier division. The Geordies also headed west to play Taunton Town and fought out an entertaining 3-3 draw which kept them in the top six. Both these sides are also playing FA Cup ties this week and they have the option of postponing midweek games to prepare, pretty much every other participating club has, but these two are carrying on regardless. Tickets

Isthmian League South Central
Harrow Borough v Rayners Lane @745pm - there are a good selection of eighth-tier matches on Tuesday but this is definitely my pick. As regular readers know, the Boro are my non-league club of choice and they've made a superb start to the season following relegation, winning all four of their opening fixtures to top the division. On Tuesday they play local rivals Rayners Lane who are new to this level following promotion. The sides met in the Middlesex Senior Cup last season and it was the visitors who won 4-0 despite Harrow then being two levels above them. With a new management team in place and a radically different squad, the hosts are now a very different proposition. The Lane also decided to sack their manager on Sunday so it will be interesting to see who they have in the dugout. Tickets are £10 on the gate

CCL Premier North
British Airways v North Greenford United @745pm - in the ninth tier, there's an unbeaten record to be protected at Spelthorne Sports' ground. NGU dropped their first points of the season last week with a draw against Egham Town but they returned to winning ways on Friday at Wokingham Town. Four points clear at the top after eight games, it's looking good. BA are new to this level following their promotion and they're handling things well. Currently sixth, they've already become the division's draw specialists so will hope to get something here. Tickets will be available on the gate

SCEFL Division 1
Clapton CFC v Lewisham Borough @745pm - the biggest crowd of the night in the 10th tier will almost certainly be found at London's oldest ground, the Old Spotted Dog. These sides played in games which pulled in a whopping total of 584 fans on Saturday - a huge amount for this level. Despite the large attendances, both lost. CCFC are in the play-off places and should start as favourites. Tickets are £5 on the gate

--------------------------------------------------------------

Wednesday 11 September

Isthmian League North
Sporting Bengal United v Basildon United @745pm - topping the bill on Wednesday night is this match in the eighth tier. After two consecutive promotions, SBU are playing at this level for the first time and doing pretty well. Ninth after four games, they're holding their own. They face a tough test here as Basildon are second and only being kept off the top by goal difference. Tickets will be available on the gate

CCL Premier South
Balham v Redhill @745pm - the hosts have made a worrying start in what looks set to be a competitive division. Second from bottom, they do have games in hand which should give them hope. The visitors have made a cracking start and are on level points with leaders AFC Whyteleafe but they have two games in hand so look like the team to beat. Tickets will be available on the gate

SCEFL Division 1
Croydon v Halls AFC @745pm - the Trams won their big game against Clapton CFC on Saturday in front of 201 fans. The thrilling 4-3 victory saw them preserve their one-point lead at the top. The visitors are another side to be playing at a new level for the first time this season and they've won three of their five games to be well placed for a push further up the table. Tickets will be available on the gate

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thursday 12 September

FA Youth Cup Preliminary Round
Corinthian Casuals v Shoreham @745pm - originally scheduled for last week, the only match I'm aware of in London on Thursday is this U18 match in Tolworth. The winners will be at home to Eastbourne Borough in the next round. Tickets will be available on the gate
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Friday 13 September

Premier League Cup
There are two games in this U21 competition on Friday. Beginning with a group stage, Charlton Athletic welcome Leeds United to The Valley and QPR take on Preston North End at Hayes & Yeading United. Both matches start at 7pm and tickets should be available on the gate - online tickets should also be available for the Charlton one but check the club's website as the week progresses

Isthmian League South Central
Sutton Common Rovers v Westfield @745pm - with landlords Carshalton Athletic in FA Cup action on Saturday, this match has been brought forward to give us a bit of bonus eighth-tier action. SCR are hovering around midtable whilst the visitors are in the top four. Tickets are £11 on the gate

ECL Division 1 South
Cannons Wood v May & Baker @745pm - the visitors are the highest ranked of the London based clubs in this division. It would be Hackney Wick but they play their games way out in Essex. Fifth at the time of writing, M&B have played a game more than most of those around them so their position in the play-off places is precarious. The hosts are 12th but have two games in hand so winning this should put them firmly back in contention. This is being played at Aveley and tickets will be available on the gate
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Saturday 14 September

Premier League
Crystal Palace v Leicester City @3pm - with the international break now over, the top flight returns. In south-east London, the Eagles welcome the Foxes for what should be an evenly-matched game. With only a point each from their opening three games, both could really do with a win. Leicester lost the last time the sides played, around 18 months ago, but were on a seven-game unbeaten run against Palace before that so they've had the better of this relationship in recent years. Tickets are only available to members whilst hospitality packages start from £285
Fulham v West Ham United @3pm - on the banks of the Thames on the west side of town, we've got this derby to enjoy. It also features two very well-matched teams who have four and three points respectively. The Cottagers did a resounding double over the Hammers last season, scoring seven goals and conceding none in the two games between them - it should be a bit closer this time. Tickets are on general sale but there are very few left. Click here for hospitality information

Championship
Millwall v Luton Town @1230pm - in the day's early game we've got a potentially spicy encounter in South Bermondsey. Both sets of fans are among the more lively in this division and as a QPR fan I've experienced some hairy moments when they've visited Shepherds Bush. As I understand it, the early kick-off is primarily for the TV cameras but I'm sure the police are pretty happy about it too. The Lions struggled for a large part of last season but successfully avoided the drop, with boss Neil Harris appointed near the end of the campaign to get them over the line. The Hatters, on the other hand, fought valiantly to stay in the Premier League and entertained many with their battling performances but ultimately didn't have enough and came down. Still with a decent squad at their disposal, their start has been pretty disastrous. With only one point from four games, pressure is really building on manager Rob Edwards and The Den is the last place he'll want to be going in that position. Tickets
Watford v Coventry City @3pm - the Hornets have made a fine start but saw their 100% record end at the hands of Sheffield United in their last game before the break. Still third, they should start as favourites against a Sky Blues team who've won only one of their four games. However, Mark Robins' side are unbeaten in five against the Hertfordshire club, a run which stretches back to 2020. Tickets

League Two
AFC Wimbledon v MK Dons @1230pm - one of the biggest games of the day, certainly in terms of significance, takes place at Plough Lane. Most of you know about the huge rivalry between these two following the relocation of the original Wimbledon to Milton Keynes in 2003 and said rivalry is no less intense 21 years later. To make aggrieved AFC fans even more annoyed, MK dominated matches between these two from 2017 until March this year when a very late goal saw AFC finally win to spark wild celebrations. TLFG reader Liam B was left nursing what you might call 'happy' bruises for days after! Tickets are always tightly controlled for this fixture so you'll need to be a member to have any chance of getting one
Bromley v Notts County @3pm - if you can't get in the match above, the other fourth-tier game on offer is also well worth a watch. With seven points from five games, the Ravens have made a solid start. On Saturday they face the Magpies who are one of the biggest clubs in the division - only former Premier League club Bradford City draw bigger crowds. The visitors are one of only two unbeaten teams in the division and arrive in second place. Interestingly, despite the difference in size between the two clubs, Bromley are unbeaten in six against the East Midlands club. Tickets

National League
Barnet v Braintree Town @3pm - the Bees were runners-up in the fifth tier last season but came unstuck in the play-offs. After eight games, they're sixth which means they look likely to challenge again. After losing to leaders Gateshead last weekend, they bounced back with a 2-1 win over Altrincham in midweek. However, boss Dean Brennan gave an angry interview after the game criticising the moaning of his own team's fans. How this affects things going forward will be interesting to see. As for this match, Essex club Braintree have just come up from the National League South (NLS) and have yet to settle with only one win to their name so far. Tickets
Dagenham & Redbridge v Gateshead @3pm - the Daggers avoided relegation by just four points last season in what was a very tight race to beat the drop. The opening weeks of 2024/25 hadn't been great but then they got a morale-boosting 3-0 win over Sutton United on Tuesday to propel them up to 14th. Here they welcome the current leaders. The Heed finished sixth last season and won the FA Trophy so they will provide formidable opposition. Tickets

FA Cup Second Round Qualifying
This weekend sees the next instalment of FA Cup action. We've had three rounds already with teams in the seventh to ninth tiers battling it out to get this far. At this point, teams in the sixth tier enter the draw so if any minnows make it past this round, they'll have done superbly well. From the London area, ninth tier Barking and Harefield United are still going strong but they've been drawn away and are playing outside the capital. The winners of each tie receive £3,375 and the losers £1,125. There are numerous ties taking place around London but here are my top three:

Cray Valley PM v Chesham United @3pm - CVPM had the season of their lives last year. Winning the Isthmian League South East, they also made it to the FA Cup First Round where they drew 1-1 with near neighbours Charlton Athletic at The Valley. The replay was far more one-sided but it was a great moment for the club. Now up in the seventh tier Isthmian Premier, they're in the top four again and should pose a very real threat to the Generals who play in the division above them. Tickets
Enfield Town v Peterborough Sports @3pm - the only tie in London between two sixth-tier teams takes place at Donkey Lane. The Towners have made a dreadful start to life in the NLS with seven defeats from eight leaving them second from bottom. Although they have two wins under their belts, the visitors haven't enjoyed a much better start in the National League North so this should be close. Neither club have ever made it beyond the qualifying rounds so they'll be hoping this is their year. Tickets
Walton & Hersham v Farnborough @3pm - a big crowd should be expected at the Elmbridge Sports Hub too. The Swans are a point off top spot in the seventh tier Southern League Premier South and Farnborough, who don't play a million miles away, are among the frontrunners in the NLS. W&H required a replay to get past eighth tier Hanworth Villa in the last round. With average attendances of almost 800, I'd expect this to get well over 1,000. Tickets

Isthmian League South Central
Rayners Lane v Raynes Park Vale @3pm - there aren't any blockbuster fixtures in the eighth tier but we do have the 'Rayne' derby! Despite the similar name, these two clubs are nowhere near each other - certainly not in London terms. In fact, Tithe Farm is 15 miles to the north-west of Grand Drive so it was even further than I thought. On the pitch, RPV are having the better season and should make the play-offs after falling just short last time. Tickets will be available on the gate for £10

CCL Premier South
Corinthian Casuals v AFC Whyteleafe @3pm - there are some really interesting-looking games in the ninth tier on Saturday but I've gone for this as they're both TLFG clubs, they're fifth and second respectively and they've scored a whopping 43 goals between them so far. The sides were two divisions apart last season but CCs got relegated from the Isthmian League and the Leafe won promotion from the SCEFL Division 1. Tickets are £10 on the gate

SCEFL Division 1
Forest Hill Park v Clapton CFC @3pm - there aren't any 10th tier top-of-the-table clashes in London this weekend so I'd always recommend going to watch a CCFC game instead. Both sides are in the top seven and expected to challenge for a play-off place and the visitors always travel in good numbers and create a good atmosphere. This is being played at the Ladywell Arena near Lewisham. Tickets will be available on the gate for £6
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sunday 15 September

Premier League
Tottenham Hotspur v Arsenal @2pm - one of the biggest matches of the season takes place at the THS on Sunday. The North London Derby (NLD) is right up there with any of the world's most hotly-contested rivalries and don't even think about getting a ticket without being prepared to spend several hundred pounds. It's still very early in the campaign but the Gunners are unbeaten in four against Spurs, have won on their last two visits to N17 and have made the better start to this campaign too. However, they do have some notable absentees like the suspended Declan Rice but new signing Raheem Sterling could make his debut following his move from Chelsea. Tickets are not available

Premier League Cup
Chelsea v Brentford @12pm - if you can't get a ticket for the above, then you could head to Kingsmeadow for this U21 game instead. Not nearly as big an occasion as the NLD, it's still a derby and, if you're driving or even cycling, you should have just enough time to travel the eight miles to Actonians' match at Bedfont Sports at 3pm to do a double. Tickets are £7

SCEFL Premier
Stansfeld v Kennington @3pm - with their landlords Cray Valley PM hosting an FA Cup tie on Saturday, Stansfeld have had to move their ninth-tier game to Sunday. Both teams are in the bottom four so we appear to have an early season six-pointer on our hands. Tickets will be available on the gate

FAWNL Plate Preliminary Round
Actonians v Abingdon United @3pm - after fielding a young side and losing to London Bees in the Determining Round, the A's have ended up playing in the lesser Plate competition rather than the League Cup. That loss was the only one they've suffered so far and they come into this on the back of an impressive 4-0 derby win over QPR. The visitors, who hail from Oxfordshire, play in a parallel fourth-tier division but haven't begun quite as well. If Actonians play a full-strength team then they should start as favourites. This match is being played at Bedfont Sports rather than their normal home at Rectory Park. Tickets are £5

FAWNL Division 1 South East
Ashford Town (Middlesex) v Cambridge United @2pm - unless they receive an influx of quality players soon, it looks as if the Tangerines will be heading out of the league. With four losses from four games and 19 goals conceded, it's looking bleak for the west London club. Cambridge are sitting snugly in midtable and should start as strong favourites. With groundworks scheduled to begin at their home ground shortly, this match has been moved to Hanworth Villa. Tickets will be available on the gate
QPR v London Seaward @2pm - somewhat surprisingly, the only other team in the division without a win and sitting in the relegation zone are the R's. At one point during the summer, rumours abounded that the club were going to spend some serious money on their women's team and really push for promotion. Sadly that hasn't transpired and despite some reasonable signings, the new management team have yet to get a tune out of them. Seaward haven't fared much better and are just above them in the table - therefore this is a big one for both. This is being played at Hayes & Yeading United and tickets will be available on the gate

ERWFL Premier
Haringey Borough v Watford LFC @2pm - in the fifth tier the hosts should be ones to watch in the title race to win this division. Third behind Real Bedford and Luton Town last season, it looks like the main challenge will come from Royston Town this year. The visitors, who are not affiliated to the men's team, are new to this level after promotion and will do well to get anything at Coles Park. Tickets will be available on the gate

L&SE Women's Regional League Division 1 North
Dulwich Hamlet Reserves v Brentford @2pm - the standout clash in the sixth tier sees the top two meet in south-east London. Both have 100% records coming into this game but the Bees have a much better goal difference. A large part of this is down to their signing of Ashley Cheatley from fourth tier Ashford Town. I'm not going to hide my distaste for how Brentford are going about things this season. Despite having more resources at their disposal than the other 11 teams put together, they still failed to win the title last season. Rather than sack their coaching team, they've decided to pay some players and effectively buy their way out of a league full of amateur clubs. If I was the coach, I'd feel pretty humiliated. What's even worse is the fact that they're celebrating every win like they've just beaten Chelsea which, in my opinion, shows very little class. If you're going to pay your way out, do it by all means, but realise you've ruined the league for the year, get on with it and don't shout about it too much. To show just how desperate Brentford look for doing this and what level they're playing at, this match is being played on a park pitch - I hope Dulwich stuff them!

TLFG: 2-8 September 2024

Welcome to this week's TLFG.

I'm going to have to keep this a bit shorter than normal for now as my wife's laptop has failed and she's got to take mine on a work trip to Birmingham in the next few minutes.

I've got full match maps and also previews up until Friday.

From my own point of view, I made it to two of three games I had targeted last week - getting to the Actonians away games at London Bees and AFC Sudbury which were both new venues for me.

The FA Youth Cup continues this week

Saturday's trip to watch Harrow Borough at Metropolitan Police was a step too far and it's a bit of luck I didn't go as a family crisis occurred which saw a relative end up in an Egyptian police cell but they're out now and all is back to normal - relatively!

THE WEEK AHEAD

This week sees the first international break of the season so the biggest men's clubs are having the week off. Matches in League One and League Two top the bill. We've also got some games in the EFL Trophy, the next round of the FA Trophy and FA Youth Cup plus the Women's Champions League and Championship both get underway too.

MIDWEEK MATCH MAP
Monday fixtures - yellow pin
Tuesday fixtures - green pin
Wednesday fixtures - turquoise pin
Thursday fixtures - purple pin
Friday fixtures - black pin

WEEKEND MATCH MAP
Saturday fixtures - blue pin
Sunday fixtures - orange pin

TLFG DAILY DIGEST
In the following section, I list what are in my opinion the most notable games of the week and give some brief reasons for my choice. Check the maps above for kick-off times, ticket info and directions.

Monday 2 September

National League South
Aveley v Dorking Wanderers @745pm - after last season's run to the play-offs, the Millers have got off to a very disappointing start and they're now winless in six and in the relegation zone. On Saturday they made the long journey to Torquay and picked up an encouraging point. On Monday they welcome opponents from Surrey who were in the fifth tier last season and have only lost once since their relegation. Tickets
Boreham Wood v Worthing @745pm - the hosts also suffered relegation last season and have made a very similar start to Dorking with only one defeat from their six games. Sitting just outside the play-off places, they face a Worthing side who have conceded a whopping 13 goals in five games, the second worst in the division, despite sitting comfortably in midtable. Tickets

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Tuesday 3 September

EFL Trophy
Leyton Orient v Arsenal U21 @7pm - the action in Southern Group E gets underway at Brisbane Road on Tuesday. If you've never heard of this competition, it features all the clubs in League One and League Two and a few U21 sides from clubs higher up the pyramid. It begins with a group stage, progresses to knockout rounds and finishes up with a final at Wembley. The O's have made a disastrous start to their league campaign, losing all four matches, but somehow won at Millwall in the EFL Cup. Arsenal, even with this young side, should fancy their chances of getting something here. Tickets
Bromley v Cambridge United @745pm - following their promotion from the National League, this will be the first time the Ravens have played in this competition. After winning their first two league games of the season, they've now lost a couple so a morale-boosting victory over a team which is struggling in League One wouldn't go amiss. Tickets

National League South
Hornchurch v Farnborough @745pm - the Urchins have lost more than they've won since getting promoted by they're keeping their heads above water. Farnborough, on the other hand, have won four of their six games to find themselves in the play-off places as we move into September. Tickets

FA Cup First Round Qualifying Replays
Cray Wanderers v Larkfield & New Hythe @745pm - London's oldest club travelled down to Kent to play ninth tier L&NH on Saturday but only managed a 1-1 draw despite playing two levels above them. Cray have never made it beyond the qualifying rounds and although they should win this, their early league form suggests they'll struggle to set a new record this season. Tickets
Hanwell Town v Sheppey United @745pm - the Geordies also spent their Saturday afternoon in Kent playing lower-division opposition and they, too, only managed a 1-1 draw. Sheppey are a different proposition to Larkfield as they are likely to challenge for the title in the eighth tier and are well capable of causing an upset here. Tickets
Walton & Hersham v Hanworth Villa @745pm - these sides produced a thrilling 3-3 draw on Friday night which saw the Swans score a late equaliser to avoid becoming the victims of a notable upset. Hanworth did superbly well against the team from a level above them but you'd think that back on home soil, W&H will probably get the job done. Tickets
Haringey Borough v Brightlingsea Regent @745pm - the hosts suffered relegation from the Isthmian Premier last season and have found it hard to adjust to the Isthmian North, losing all three of their games so far. Brightlingsea are also in the division but are doing considerably better, meaning the London club did well to draw 1-1 and force this replay. Tickets
Hayes & Yeading United v Margate @745pm - these two eighth-tier sides ground out a 0-0 draw on the Kent coast on Saturday meaning they have to do it all again at the SkyEx on Tuesday. The hosts have made it beyond the qualifying rounds numerous times in their history and start as favourites in my book. Tickets are £12 on the gate
Barking v St Neots Town @745pm - there's a tie between two ninth-tier teams at Mayesbrook Park as a goal 20 minutes from time earned the Blues a 2-2 draw in Cambridgeshire on Saturday. Since reforming in 2006, the best Barking have done is make the Third Round Qualifying so they've still got a way to go to match that. Tickets are £10 on the gate

CCL Premier North
North Greenford United v Egham Town @745pm - the hosts have got off to a blistering start in the league and still have their 100% record after six games. Three points clear at the top, they next welcome another side in the top five. Win this too and they'll have to be regarded as serious title contenders. Tickets will be available on the gate

--------------------------------------------------------------

Wednesday 4 September

UEFA Women's Champions League
In the opening round of this competition, four teams are put into a group and they play a mini tournament over a few days at the same venue. Arsenal, Atletico Madrid, Rangers and Rosenborg have been drawn together for a series of matches at Boreham Wood's ground. On Wednesday, Atletico Madrid play Rosenborg at 12pm and Arsenal and Rangers meet at 730pm. The winners will meet in the final and the losers and third-place play-off on Saturday. Tickets for all games are available from
Arsenal

SCEFL Premier
Glebe v VCD Athletic @745pm - with 13 points from five games, the Vickers are unbeaten and top of the league. That could change if Holmesdale win on Tuesday but they will have three games in hand to get themselves back in front. Glebe were among the promotion contenders last season but they've still to find their feet this time and are in midtable. Tickets will be available on the gate

Essex Senior League
Woodford Town v Takeley @745pm - the hosts are another one of the early pacesetters in the ninth tier. Top and undefeated after four games, the north-east London club have FA Vase finalists Great Wakering Rovers hot on their heels but getting anything out of Takeley will be tough as they're a top-four side too. Tickets will be available on the gate

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thursday 5 September

FA Youth Cup Preliminary Round
There are matches in this U18 competition most days this week but on Thursday that's all there is. There are eight ties spread all over the capital with the likes of AFC Croydon Athletic, Corinthian Casuals, Erith Town and Hanwell Town all hosting games. Given it's an FA competition, be prepared to pay a nominal entry fee at each game - it shouldn't exceed £5
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Friday 6 September

FA Trophy First Round Qualifying
Kingstonian v Eastbourne Town @8pm - one of the best things about groundshares is we often get teams drawn at home in the same rounds of cup competitions meaning we get bonus games on Friday nights or Sunday afternoons. This is one such game as Raynes Park Vale are at home too. This national knockout competition is for clubs in the fifth to the eighth tiers with its final at Wembley. This tie sees two eighth-tier clubs who are both eighth in their respective divisions meet at Grand Drive so it should be close. Tickets are £10 on the gate

Essex Senior League
Barking v West Essex @745pm - if you're on the east side of town, then this ninth-tier match would appear to be your best option. Both are in midtable and both will be coming into this off the back of games on Tuesday night so it's a tight turnaround for them. Tickets will be available on the gate for £10

FA Youth Cup Preliminary Round
Langley v Hilltop @745pm - this is one for the hardened groundhoppers among you. Langley don't have a home of their own and currently play their senior matches at Uxbridge. However, this is being played at Grasshoppers rugby club which is walkable from either Osterley Tube station on the Piccadilly Line or Syon Lane on SWR from Waterloo
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Saturday 7 September

League One
Charlton Athletic v Rotherham United @3pm - with there being an international break this weekend, the highest level game on offer is this one at The Valley. Nathan Jones' side have made a solid start but suffered their first reverse last weekend when they lost 2-0 at Reading. The Millers finished bottom of the Championship last season and have continued to find life tough in the the third tier. However, they picked up an important win against Huddersfield Town last time out. Tickets

UEFA Women's Champions League
The mini tournament which began earlier in the week concludes on Saturday at Boreham Wood with a third place play-off between Atletico Madrid and Rangers at 12pm and a final which sees Arsenal take on Rosenborg for a place in the next round at 730pm. Tickets are available for each game separately. The kick-off times mean you can easily do a treble and see three games on Saturday with nearby non-league sides Belstone and Hadley offering good 3pm options

Women's friendly
Chelsea v Feyenoord @12pm - the Blues welcome Dutch opposition to Kingsmeadow for this pre-season game as they prepare to defend their WSL title. Although one of the biggest names in the Netherlands, the visitors only managed an eighth-place finish last season. If you want to see at least two games on Saturday afternoon, then the early kick-off should give you time to get to one of the nearby non-league matches at Corinthian Casuals, Hampton & Richmond Borough, Raynes Park Vale or Westside. These will all finish in plenty of time for you to get to the Arsenal game above if you want to then do a third. Tickets

National League
Sutton United v Boston United @3pm - The U's got off to a good start and have only lost one of their six matches but they're also three without a win, meaning they're starting to slip down the table. The Pilgrims scraped into the National League North play-offs last season and went on to win them to return to the fifth tier for the first time since 2002. Depending on your mode of transport, and if you get lucky with the traffic, you could probably even get to this match after the Chelsea one too. Tickets
Wealdstone v York City @3pm - both these sides successfully fought battles against relegation last season but have experienced contrasting fortunes in the early part of this campaign. The Stones made a poor start under new boss Matt Taylor but after losing their first three, they're now unbeaten in three and have a win under their belts. With only one defeat from six, the visitors are in the top six but head to Grosvenor Vale having lost all four matches they've played against the London club over the last two seasons. Tickets

National League South
Enfield Town v Maidstone United @3pm - the Towners were another side to enjoy play-off glory last season but you have to wonder if they were ready for life in the sixth tier given their worrying start. With six defeats from seven, they're in the bottom three. Kent club Maidstone had a great 2023/24. They too made the play-offs but will be most remembered for their run to the Fifth Round of the FA Cup which included a stunning win over Ipswich Town at Portman Road. Sadly, they've also struggled so far and sit just above the relegation zone. Tickets
Hampton & Richmond Borough v Boreham Wood @3pm - two clubs from TLFG's catchment area meet at The Beveree. The hosts have been inconsistent so far and are floating around lower midtable but their 1-0 win at Weymouth in midweek will have raised spirits. The Wood are playing in this division for the first time since 2015 following their relegation and, like Sutton, are starting to slide after a positive start. Tickets
Welling United v Torquay United @3pm - the Wings are often among the strugglers in this division but manage to keep their heads above water and this season has begun in a way which suggests that form might continue. Former EFL club Torquay are one of the biggest clubs in the NLS and are second after a strong start. Tickets

Isthmian League Premier
Carshalton Athletic v Lewes @3pm - the MOTD in the seventh tier, in my opinion, takes place at Colston Avenue in south London. The Robins are in the top 10 and made comfortable progress in the FA Cup last weekend as they saw off Haywards Heath Town. Although top with a 100% record, the same can't be said of the Rooks who suffered one of the biggest upsets of the First Round Qualifying, losing at home to ninth tier Harefield United on penalties after drawing the initial tie in Middlesex. Tickets

FA Trophy First Round Qualifying
Raynes Park Vale v Beckenham Town @3pm - there are numerous ties featuring eighth-tier clubs all over London on Saturday but this match would appear to be the best in my opinion. Both currently in the top three of their respective divisions of the Isthmian League, this match at Grand Drive should be well worth a watch. Tickets are £10 on the gate

SSML Premier
Cockfosters v London Lions @3pm - in the ninth tier we've got a north London derby. Situated at the end of the Piccadilly Line, Chalk Lane is just across the road from the station so is really easy to get to. The visitors play a little to the west on the other side of Barnet. Currently seventh and sixth and only a point apart in the table, the two matches between these sides last season produced 13 goals so hopefully we'll get similar levels of entertainment here. Tickets are £10 on the gate

SCEFL Division 1
Croydon v Clapton CFC @3pm - the Trams are currently top of this 10th-tier division after making a great start to the campaign. However, their lead is slim and three teams are queued up just a point behind them. One of those sides are CCFC so first place is potentially up for grabs. There's been a lot of online build up to this game with the hosts really trying to get a big crowd and there's no doubt the visitors will travel in good numbers. Aside from the football, there will be a number of attractions for all the family to enjoy including face painting, a bouncy castle and hook a duck! Tickets are £7
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Sunday 8 September

Women's Championship
Charlton Athletic v Portsmouth @2pm - the season gets underway in the women's second tier this weekend. The Addicks missed out on the title and promotion by one point last season so should be among the favourites to challenge again. Last Sunday they held WSL side Aston Villa to a 2-2 draw which should give them some confidence. Pompey are new to this division after winning promotion from the FAWNL. My friend's niece is young goalkeeper Eve Annets. She signed for Manchester City in the summer and was promptly loaned to Portsmouth so hopefully she'll get a game here. The match is being played at The Valley and tickets are £10 online. They become £2 more if you buy them on arrival
London City Lionesses v Newcastle United @2pm - there's a lot of excitement about these teams too. Both have received significant investment over the last few months with American millionaire Michele Kang funding LCL and Saudi owners pumping money into the Magpies. Swedish legend Kosovare Allsani and England's Demi Stokes are just two of the players who have been brought in by the sides in a show of purchasing power that's probably never been seen at this level of the women's game. This will be LCL's first competitive match at their new Hayes Lane home which they share with Bromley. Tickets

FAWNL Southern Premier
AFC Wimbledon v Oxford United @2pm - the Dons return to Plough Lane after picking up their first win of the season against Cheltenham Town. With four points from three games, they should be satisfied with the start they've made following promotion. The visitors are usually among the challengers in this division with their fifth-place finish last season their lowest for a while. Currently fourth, they should provide the hosts with a good workout. Tickets
Watford v MK Dons @2pm - the Hornets have also accrued four points from their first three games following relegation from the Championship. On Sunday they take on the bottom club and victory would appear to be almost certain. MK Dons were a solid enough side last season but lost most of their squad to big spending Real Bedford in the division below over the summer. After three games they've scored one goal and conceded 17 - relegation looks assured already. This match is being played at Wealdstone. Tickets

FAWNL Division 1 South East
Actonians v QPR @2pm - it's West London Derby day in the fourth tier as these two local rivals battle for supremacy. The A's finished one place and two points below the R's last season despite doing the double over them in the derby games. Both sides have experienced managerial change over the summer and styles have altered significantly. What makes this match even more anticipated than normal is that QPR have brought in Danny Harrigan as manager. He presided over Actonians' most successful season ever in 2022/23. With seven points from three games, the hosts have started well whilst QPR are still looking for their first league win. The match is being played at Rectory Park in Northolt. Tickets are £5 online in advance or £5 cash only on the gate. Sadly I won't be there but I've got a piece in the printed programme which you can buy on arrival
Ashford Town (Middlesex) v Norwich City @2pm - each season there's usually one team which really struggles and barely gets a point. Sadly for the Tangerines, it looks like it's going to be them. After a really great 2023/24 which saw them finish fourth, they lost star player Ashley Cheatley to Brentford and a number of others departed too. They've lost all three of their opening games and suffered a 7-0 drubbing at Dulwich Hamlet last weekend. It's likely to get even worse here as the Canaries are one of the title favourites and have won every game. This match is being played at Hanworth Villa as Ashford are having a new pitch installed. Tickets are £5 on the gate
London Bees v Dulwich Hamlet @2pm - both sides are new to the division following relegation and promotion respectively and this will be a good measure of how good they are. With one point from three games, the hosts have yet to get going but they've had a very tough run of fixtures so I don't want to judge them just yet. Dulwich, with the momentum of promotion and cheered on by large crowds, could do really well this year. With two wins from three, their only setback was a 3-2 loss to Norwich who will beat most teams this season. Form suggests at least a point for the visitors but let's see. This is being played at the Bees Stadium which is part of The Hive complex in north London. Tickets
London Seaward v Cambridge United @2pm - after a bright start saw them win at Chesham on the opening weekend, the hosts' results have tailed off sharply with back-to-back losses to Dulwich in the league and cup and a 5-0 defeat to Norwich. Granted, those were tough opponents so this match against Cambridge, who have also only won one game, will be another good yardstick of how well these two sides are likely to fare this season. This is being played at Redridge's ground and tickets will be available on the gate - I haven't seen a price but it's likely to be £5

L&SE Women's League Premier
Fulham v Ashford United @230pm - if you want to visit a Premier League club's training ground then head down to Motspur Park for this match. The Cottagers are the biggest name in this division and should really be winning it this year after finishing third in a decent title battle with Dulwich Hamlet and Dartford last season. The visitors avoided relegation by a point in 2023/24 so they'll do well to get anything here. Tickets
