TLFG: 31 July - 6 August 2023

Welcome one and all to the final TLFG of pre-season.

For many, the some the season has already begun and by the weekend only Premier League and Isthmian League clubs will be without competitive football - that all begins the following weekend.

How has your week been?

Mine came to an incredibly wet end as I watched Actonians take on a full strength Watford squad from two divisions above them in torrential rain at Gunnersbury Park.

As I mentioned last week, the gulf in ability and resource between divisions in the women's game is massive and it showed here.

One of the biggest crowds of the week will be for the Game4Ukraine on Saturday

Still with several recognised first-team players on holiday, the hosts put out a side largely consisting of reserve team players and very young trialists and they found it hard to string anything meaningful together against their well-drilled opponents.

This is as hard as it's likely to get probably all season so hopefully things will become a bit more competitive in their remaining friendlies which begin with a trip to Luton Town, who play a level below, on Thursday night.

My next match should be Celtic v Athletic Bilbao in Glasgow on Tuesday. I'm heading up on Monday and hope to enjoy a few days in the Scottish city.

Many thanks for all the questions again this week, keep them coming.

Right, I need to finish my packing - have a great one!

THE WEEK AHEAD

There are matches taking place every day this week bar Thursday so you'll need to find something else to do that night or head out of town and watch that Actonians game I mentioned above.

Aside from all the various leagues which get underway this weekend, this season's FA Cup sees its opening round being played too.

With ties on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, you've got no excuse not to begin your 'Road to Wembley' groundhop.

As always, please make sure you check with clubs before you travel just in case a game has been called off or the venue or kick-off time has changed - this is highly possible for some of the lower non-league clubs. Also, please let me know if anything is wrong or missing.

Details on all of this week's games can be found on the following match maps. If you've never used them before, please note that when there is more than one match at a specific ground you'll only be able to see individual match pins if you zoom right in. If you don't, the pins obscure each other and you might miss them. To avoid this, you can also scroll down the list of games on the drop down menu at the top of the map page to make sure you get all the information. Games are listed from top to bottom in date order so Monday's games (yellow pin) will appear first and Sunday's (orange pin) last. Games are also ranked in terms of status so the higher the division, the higher up the list they will appear on each day.
Also if you're unfamiliar with the English league structure I indicate the level at which an individual league sits in the national 'pyramid' with the Premier League at the top (Level 1) and various minor leagues at the bottom (Level 10). Typically a top level game will see crowds of anywhere between 20,000-60,000. These figures will gradually decline as you go down the leagues until you get to Levels 8-10 where attendances of 150 or less are most common.

It should also be noted that the top four levels are for fully professional teams. Level 5 has a mixture of professional and semi-professional teams, while Levels 6-10 will see most players paid but it will vary from no more than travel expenses at the bottom, right up to several hundred pounds a week at the top.

TLFG DAILY DIGEST
In the following section, I list what are in my opinion the most notable games of the week and give some brief reasons for my choice. Check the maps above for kick-off times, ticket info and directions.

Monday 31 July

Essex Senior League
Ilford v Sporting Bengal United @745pm - the hosts made a disappointing start to their campaign on Saturday, losing 3-1 at home to Halstead Town who they finished on level points with in lower midtable last season. SBU won promotion back to this level after winning the play-offs last season and began with a very decent away win at Great Wakering Rovers who were an Isthmian League side in 2022/23

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Tuesday 1 August

Friendlies
Bromley v Crystal Palace XI @745pm - the Ravens gave a good account of themselves during a tight 2-1 defeat to League Two side Crawley Town on Saturday, their only defeat of pre-season so far. Their warm-up matches conclude with this game against a young Palace side. Tickets are £15
Welling United v Luton Town XI @7pm - after losing their first four friendlies, the Wings finally managed a 3-2 win at Isthmian League club Beckenham Town on Saturday. With the Hatters playing Wolves the next day, this is also likely to be a young Luton squad. Tickets are £10
Hanwell Town v QPR U21 @7pm - a crowd of over 600 saw the Geordies beat Brentford's second string 3-0 on Saturday. Next up is a squad from their nearest EFL club. QPR's first team ended pre-season with a disgraceful 5-0 defeat at Oxford United on Saturday so it wouldn't surprise me to see Gareth Ainsworth send a few of his 'senior' players to take part in this one but don't count on it. Tickets are £7
Walton & Hersham v Fulham U21 @745pm - the Swans won the play-offs in May to make it up to the seventh tier. Sensationally, it was their third promotion in a row so they really are a club to keep an eye on this season. The Cottagers' first team will have just got back from a tour of America and will be preparing for their friendly against German opposition on Saturday but more on that below. Tickets will be available on the gate for £5

Essex Senior League
Frenford v Woodford Town @745pm - the hosts won promotion to the ninth tier for the first time in their history last season and this will be their first home game at this level. Sadly they lost their opener at Little Oakley 2-0 and it's unlikely to get much easier here against what must be one of the contenders for the title.

ECL Division 1 South
Newbury Forest v Clapton CFC @745pm - after winning the Middlesex County League, CCFC now find themselves in the 10th tier for the first time. Playing at the oldest ground in London and with almost certainly the largest fanbase in the division, they will be well worth a visit this season. On Saturday they drew 0-0 at Wormley Rovers who finished third in 2022/23. On Tuesday night they find themselves making the short trip north to play Newbury Forest at Oakside which is located right next to Barkingside Tube station

A bit further afield
Bishop's Stortford v Leyton Orient @745pm - the O's complete pre-season with a trip to Hertfordshire to play last season's Isthmian League champions. The hosts have had the misfortune of being allocated a place in the National League North in 2023/24 despite being just outside London, meaning they will find themselves facing journeys to the likes of Blyth Spartans, Darlington and South Shields. Tickets are £10 on the gate
--------------------------------------------------------------

Wednesday 2 August

Emirates Cup
Arsenal v Monaco @6pm - probably the biggest game of the summer so far, the Emirates Cup returns on Wednesday. This competition began back in 2007 and used to feature four teams and be played over a weekend - it was arguably the highlight of pre-season in London. However, since 2019 it has just been one match between Arsenal and a visiting team. Monaco finished sixth in Ligue 1 last season and finished third in this tournament back in 2014 when Valencia won it. Tickets have sold out

SSML Premier
London Lions v Crawley Green @8pm - the hosts are about to commence the season in a different division for the fourth campaign running. They had been set to begin this one in the CCL Premier North but agreed a swap with Ardley United who were unhappy with their allocation. Crawley Green finished in midtable last year as did London Lions so it should be pretty even

Essex Senior League
Romford v Buckhurst Hill @745pm - after this weekend's first round of games, Romford find themselves top after demolishing Saffron Walden 5-1 on Friday. Buckhurst Hill narrowly lost 1-0 to Barking so this will be their second visit to Mayesbrook Park in four days

ECL Division 1 South
May & Baker v Cannons Wood @745pm - in the 10th tier, there's a groundshare derby between the sides who share Parkside with Aveley. M&B lost their first game 3-0 at home to Barkingside on Friday whilst this will be Cannons Wood's opener
---------------------------------------------------------------

Friday 4 August

FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round
Probably the world's most famous club knockout competition gets underway on Friday with two ties in the London area. Clubs at this level really benefit from the prize money on offer with the winners collecting a cheque for £1,125 and the losers £375

Edgware & Kingsbury v Waltham Abbey @745pm - the hosts achieved a very creditable sixth-placed finish in the ninth tier last season and they'll surely want to push for the play-offs this time round. On Friday they welcome a side who finished midtable in the level above and will hope to pull off one of the first cupsets of the season
Woodford Town v Hertford Town @745pm - it's a very similar story at Ashtons where another ninth tier club play host to one from the eighth. Woodford managed to finish third in the Essex Senior League and pose a real threat to Hertford

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Saturday 5 August

Game4Ukraine
The biggest crowd of the day could well come at Stamford Bridge where a hugely impressive list of ex-pros and celebrities take to the field to raise money for people in need in war-torn Ukraine. The match kicks off at 6pm and can therefore be combined with several others earlier in the day. Tickets can be bought for around £30 - full details on the event's website

Friendlies
Brentford v Lille @4pm - the Bees return from their American tour to play this final friendly at the GTech. Brentford had the best season in their history in 2022/23, finishing ninth in the Premier League. With star striker Ivan Toney suspended until January for betting offences, it will be interesting to see how they fare this season and against one of the top clubs in France here. Tickets for Brentford home games are very hard to get because of their small capacity so this is a rare opportunity to visit if you're not a member. Most tickets are £15
Crystal Palace v Lyon @530pm - it's also incredibly hard to get tickets to watch the Eagles without membership so this friendly also gives the casual visitor the chance to tick Selhurst Park off their list. Roy Hodgson returned in the latter stages of last season to steer Palace to Premier League safety and they'll hope to more than hold their own again under his leadership this time. However, star player Wilfried Zaha finally left the club to join Turkish giants Galatasaray last week and his will be big shoes to fill. Lyon are one of the biggest clubs in France and have won Ligue 1 seven times since the turn of the century but it's been a while since their last major success. The late kick-off means it can be combined with the FA Cup tie Balham are hosting in nearby Thornton Heath. Tickets are £14
Fulham v 1899 Hoffenheim @1pm - the Cottagers are another one of our local sides to have spent most of pre-season on tour in America but they're back for this one. Craven Cottage is often voted as the best ground to go to by visitors to London but like many top-flight clubs, it's very hard to get a ticket without membership. Hoffenheim finished 12th in the German league last season and should provide a good test. Tickets are £15

Championship
Watford v QPR @3pm - with the warm-ups complete, the EFL gets underway in earnest this weekend and we've got this derby to kick things off locally. Both sides had very disappointing seasons last year. The Hornets came down from the Premier League and despite having access to parachute payments, only finished 11th and went through three managers in the process. The R's came flying out of the traps under new boss Michael Beale and were top in October before he controversially moved to former club Rangers in Scotland. The wheels then fell off and his replacement Neil Critchley only lasted until the spring when club legend Gareth Ainsworth took over. Results barely improved but a stunning win at eventual champions Burnley shortly before the end of the season helped to keep them up. Neither side have had a great pre-season so it could go either way. Tickets are available

League One
Charlton Athletic v Leyton Orient @3pm - talking of derbies, there's arguably an even more interesting one at the Valley where the Addicks welcome the newly promoted O's. Although Charlton didn't challenge for the play-offs, the second half of their season under new boss Dean Holden saw them improve significantly and they finished 10th. As already mentioned, Leyton Orient had a great campaign and won the League Two title. However, a number of their best players have left the club over the summer including player of the season Lawrence Vigouroux who joined Burnley. Tickets are available

League Two
Sutton United v Notts County @3pm - the U's made their League Two debut in 2021/22 and did superbly well to finish eighth and make the EFL Trophy Final, last season wasn't quite as impressive they ended up in 14th. Pre-season hasn't been hugely successful and some observers have predicted it could be a year where they slide a bit further. Notts County are back in the EFL after suffering relegation in 2019. They did it after coming through an epic battle with big spending Wrexham which saw them ultimately have to settle for second and a dramatic win in the play-offs over Chesterfield. Tickets are available

National League
Barnet v Hartlepool United @3pm - the National League also starts this weekend. The Bees made it to the play-offs last season but lost over two legs to local rivals Boreham Wood. They'll hope for at least a repeat of that this time and they begin with a challenging fixture against a Hartlepool side who finished second bottom in League Two last season to suffer relegation back to the ranks of non-league
Wealdstone v York City @3pm - as one of the smaller teams in the division, the Stones did really well to not only survive again but finish 13th whilst former EFL clubs like Scunthorpe, Torquay and Yeovil all got relegated. York, another former EFL club, missed relegation by just three points so the hosts should fancy their chances

National League South
Dartford v Bath City @3pm - the Darts finished as runners-up to local rivals Ebbsfleet United last season but it was third placed Oxford City who prevailed in the play-offs and went up. Bath managed a midtable finish last season but recorded a decent 0-0 draw on their last visit to Princes Park just before Christmas

Southern League Premier South
Harrow Borough v AFC Totton @3pm - for some reason the seventh tier Southern League starts this weekend but the parallel Isthmian League doesn't. Anyway, back to this game. Harrow ended the season in the relegation zone but received a surprise reprieve when Metropolitan Police took voluntary relegation. Having already begun preparations for life in the eighth tier, which included hiring a relatively inexperienced new manager from the ninth tier, everyone involved found themselves a bit surprised by the new scenario. Pre-season has been reasonably successful but the visit of the Stags who won promotion from Division 1 South after winning the title, could be tough

FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round
Redbridge v New Salamis @3pm - there are loads of ties in London on Saturday featuring sides in the eighth and ninth tiers and it's really hard to single any out. I've gone for this one as it features two sides in the Isthmian North. Redbridge finished as runners-up in the Essex Senior League and won promotion via the play-offs to join their opponents at the higher level. It will be very interesting to see how they get on
Sutton Common Rovers v Burgess Hill Town @3pm - there's another all eighth-tier tie at Church Road, a ground they share with AFC Whyteleafe. Both these sides narrowly avoided relegation from their parallel divisions of the Isthmian League last season so it should be close
Wembley v Bearsted @3pm - if they've been drawn at home and you want attempt the 'Road to Wembley' and watch a match in every round, then you've really got to start at Vale Farm. The Lions finished ninth in the CCL Premier North and Bearsted came 13th in the SCEFL Premier with only four points less so this should also be competitive

--------------------------------------------------------

Sunday 6 August

FA Community Shield
Arsenal v Manchester City @4pm - the traditional curtain raiser to the new season between the Premier League champions and FA Cup winners takes place at Wembley on Sunday. With City winning both competitions last season, the Gunners will fill in as runners-up in the league. Unsurprisingly, it has sold out

Friendly
Tottenham Hotspur v Shakhtar Donetsk @2pm - the fundraising for Ukraine continues on Sunday afternoon but with a more serious friendly between two proper teams. If you haven't been before, the superb THS is well worth a visit and tickets don't go on sale to non-members very often. Remaining tickets for this appear to be £25

FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round
AFC Croydon Athletic v Sutton Athletic @3pm - the Rams have had a decent pre-season following their takeover by Wilfried Zaha and Stormzy. This important cup match will be the first competitive game since they became owners and it comes against a team from a parallel ninth-tier division
Welling Town v Cobham @2pm - there's a similar match-up in south-east London where the Boots go in search of their first win at their new home, the ground they share with Phoenix Sports. Cobham play in the parallel Combined Counties League and this will be their first match of the season

Women's friendly
Fulham v QPR @230pm - the pick of the women's games on Sunday is definitely this West London derby which is being played at the Cottagers' training ground in Motspur Park. The R's play a level above Fulham so should be marginal favourites

TLFG: 24-30 July 2023

Greetings one and all and welcome to the latest edition of TLFG as pre-season approaches its climax.

Not only that but some of our local leagues in the ninth and tenth tiers get going this week with the first matches on Friday night.

There are a great selection of friendlies around town and some really good ones in the surrounding counties too.

So what have you been to see?

My Friday morning was spent at Actonians HQ where they welcomed assembled media guests.

Ellen White pays a visit to Actonians on Friday morning

A team from BBC Breakfast were the main protagonists though as they did some Women's World Cup coverage featuring the club's U10 and U11 teams who are among some of the sides who have benefited from National Lottery funding.

England's record goalscorer Ellen White was on hand to answer a few questions, have a kickaround with the kids and sign some autographs/do a few selfies.

Reporting at 6am, we were there until after 10am as the girls and parents had a fun but exhausting morning.

I finished the week by travelling down to south-east London to see Actonians take on a Charlton Athletic U21 side at their Sparrows Lane training ground.

Croydon celebrate their 70th anniversary on Saturday

Given the League One club have been in all kinds of trouble off the pitch over the last few years, I was really impressed with the facilities and the sheer size of the place - the walk from the entrance gate to the training pitch we were on must have been around 1km.

If you're not fully across the world of women's football, the Addicks play in the women's second tier and Actonians the fourth.

The gulf in ability and resources between each tier in the women's game is sizeable hence the reason the hosts were fielding an U21 side and not their full team.

The game itself was very evenly fought for the first 20 minutes but then the hosts managed to take control.

With Charlton able to field a completely different XI in the second half, their higher energy levels gave them even more of an advantage.

I think the final score was 7-2 but there were loads of chances and it could have been way more as both sides hit the woodwork a number of times.

For what is effectively an amateur side (I think they get expenses), the A's gave a good account of themselves and it was encouraging to see a number of new players do really well.

Next Sunday they host Watford, another Championship team, so they can expect another challenging afternoon.

It was also great to meet TLFG reader James A who hails from that part of the world and came down to enjoy proceedings, hopefully we'll meet at another game soon.

I've also had some nice messages from Kelvin W, Neil A, Frank L and Tomas R this week as they've discussed where they're going and asking for advice about future visits - keep 'em coming as I love to help.

My next game is hopefully going to be Actonians' next friendly against Watford on Sunday at Gunnersbury Park but with the family heading off on holiday the next morning, I might be 'advised' to stay home - we'll see.

THE WEEK AHEAD

There are friendlies to be enjoyed every day this week with clubs at all levels and several from overseas in action.

Outside London, I've included some extra games featuring pro clubs that might be of interest too.

However, please be aware that there's a rail strike on Saturday 29 July which won't affect London Underground services but will severely impact all national rail services.

As a result, leaving the capital is only advisable if you've got a car as many coach services will already be booked up.

Monday 24 July

Friendly
Redbridge v Newbury Forest @745pm - all roads lead to Mayesbrook Park on Monday night after this game originally scheduled for Tuesday got brought forward. It's good that they did as groundhoppers can now watch a match in London every day this week. These two normally groundshare at Oakside a little to the north. Following their recent promotion, Redbridge now play two levels above their opponents
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Tuesday 25 July

Friendlies
Millwall v Charlton Athletic @745pm - the biggest game of the night sees these two south-east London rivals meet in a fixture that raised a few eyebrows when it was announced. They are geographically closer to each other than they are to any other EFL clubs (less than four miles apart) and there have been some feisty games between them. The Lions have dominated in recent years and haven't lost a competitive game to the Addicks since 1996. Given they play a level above Charlton and have home advantage, they should start as favourites. Tickets are £10
AFC Wimbledon v Portsmouth @7pm - elsewhere in south London, the Dons welcome League One opposition to Plough Lane. After drawing 1-1 with QPR on Saturday, they'll fancy their chances of at least matching that result against Pompey. Tickets are £10
Dagenham & Redbridge v Leyton Orient @745pm - after drawing the east London derby with a strong West Ham side on Saturday, the Daggers can look forward to another match against local opposition on Tuesday. Now in League One, the O's were in the same division as the hosts as recently as 2019 and haven't won on their last three visits to the Chigwell Construction Stadium. Tickets are £13

A bit further afield
Woking v Sutton United @745pm - the pick of the action beyond the M25 for me is this match between two former National League rivals. This Surrey commuter town is less than 30 minutes by train from Waterloo station so is quick and easy to get to. The visitors are about to embark on their third season in League Two and last year, the Cards came very close to joining them. Tickets are £12

--------------------------------------------------------------

Wednesday 26 July

Friendlies
Unusually, this is the quietest day of the week with 10th-tier teams Hillingdon Borough and NW London hosting games. In east London, recently promoted Barking Women welcome Billericay Town to Mayesbrook Park. UPDATE - Sutton Common Rovers and British Airways have also announced friendlies for this night which have now been added to the match map
---------------------------------------------------------------

Thursday 27 July

Friendlies
Kingstonian v Chelsea U18 @745pm - the K's only pre-season game at their Imperial Fields home comes against a young Blues squad. Having narrowly avoided relegation from the Isthmian Premier in 2022/23, they'll be hoping for much better this season
Erith & Belvedere v Hastings United @745pm - the Deres won the SCEFL title last season to move back up to the eighth tier. On Thursday they take on one of the bigger clubs in the division above
----------------------------------------------------------------

Friday 28 July

Friendly
Dulwich Hamlet v Millwall U21 @745pm - with their grounds around two miles apart, it's fair to call this a derby of sorts although I've no idea if they've played a competitive game against each other ever. With average crowds of 2,460, the Hamlet were the second best supported non-league club in London last season but still suffered relegation to the seventh tier. Conversely, the Lions' U21 side won the Professional Development League title after a very impressive season. Tickets are £12.80

Essex Senior League
Romford v Saffron Walden Town @745pm - there are some other good friendlies between non-league sides on Friday but why watch one of those kickabouts when you can watch the first competitive league match of the ESL season? Both these sides finished in midtable last season. This is being played at Barking's ground

ECL Division 1 South
May & Baker v Barkingside @745pm - the action also gets underway in this tenth-tier division too. The hosts finished eighth last season to miss the play-offs by eight points whilst the 'Side ended up in midtable. This is being played at Aveley's ground

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Saturday 29 July

Friendlies
Millwall v Fortuna Sittard @1230pm - the most eye-catching friendlies usually take place in the final week of teams' pre-seasons and for the Lions, that's definitely the case. Finishing midtable in the Dutch top flight last season, the Fortunezen should provide a great workout for Gary Rowett's side. Tickets are £10
Charlton Athletic v Aberdeen @1pm - elsewhere in south-east London, the Addicks welcome Scottish opposition to The Valley. The Dons had a great 2022/23 and finished third in the Premiership, giving them a place in the Europa League. Tickets are £12
Boreham Wood v Arsenal XI @3pm - the Wood play host to the majority of the Gunners' U21 and women's games throughout the season and I'm sure a friendly against them is part of the deal. With the first team playing Barcelona in California two days before this, there's virtually zero chance you'll see any of them in action here but the youngsters they do have should be well worth a watch. Tickets are £15
Barnet v Cambridge United @3pm - unbeaten in their five pre-season games so far, the Bees take on League One opposition at the Hive in their final friendly. Cambridge avoided relegation on the final day of the season and will be another one of the clubs looking to have a much better campaign. Tickets are £12
Bromley v Crawley Town @3pm - after beating Millwall's U21s on Saturday, the Ravens next play Dartford before entertaining more EFL opposition on Saturday. Crawley have won all of their pre-season games bar the home match against a strong Crystal Palace side who beat them 4-0. Tickets are £15
Dagenham & Redbridge v Gillingham @3pm - the Daggers' final home game of pre-season sees them welcome League Two opposition from the other side of the Thames. Neil Harris's Gills side enjoyed a 5-0 win at Dartford on Saturday. Tickets are £13

A bit further afield
Travel advisory - sadly there is a rail strike on Saturday which means travel beyond London's borders should really only be undertaken by car or you could get stranded

AFC Bournemouth v Atalanta @3pm - tickets for Premier League games at the Vitality Stadium are usually very hard to get because it is so small. Tickets for friendlies like this one against Serie A opposition are usually your best bet of visiting the ground. Tickets are £18
Norwich City v Olympiacos @3pm - the Canaries welcome one of the biggest clubs in Greece to Carrow Road on Saturday. Finishing third in the regular season and play-off round, the Greek giants will play in this season's Europa League
Southampton v AZ Alkmaar @3pm - with Fortuna Sittard heading to Millwall, there's further Eredivisie presence at St Mary's where the Kaaskoppen pay a visit. They managed a top-four finish in the Netherlands last season so the Saints will have to be on their game to win. Tickets are £15 in advance and £20 on matchday
Oxford United v QPR @3pm - these two met at Wembley in the 1986 League Cup Final. It was a huge occasion for both clubs as neither made it to many finals and it was underdogs Oxford who comfortably won 3-0 in a devastating day for R's fans. As a result, there will always be a bit of history between the two. With only one competitive game between the two in the 21st century, which QPR won two years ago, chances to play have been limited to friendlies like this. Tickets are £12

Essex Senior League
West Essex v FC Clacton @3pm - the visitors were the only club to finish in the top four last season who are playing in London on Saturday. The hosts, who play at Wadham Lodge in Walthamstow, won more than they lost and ended up in tenth

SCEFL Premier Division
Welling Town v Rusthall @3pm - it's hard to pick a standout game in this division but I've gone for this as it's the first for the Boots following the announcement of their new groundshare with Phoenix Sports which brings them back into London

70th Anniversary Match
Croydon v Tooting & Mitcham United @3pm - the Trams have been building up to this match for a while and have loads going on for all the family at the Croydon Arena. With local rivals AFC Croydon Athletic recently receiving significant investment from high-profile backers, reaching out to new fans is now more important than ever

--------------------------------------------------------

Sunday 30 July

Friendlies
Actonians v Watford @2pm - it's all about women's football on Sunday with the fourth-tier A's welcoming Championship opposition. The Hornets won promotion back to the second tier last season and will provide formidable opposition to Harry Berkeley's team who were given a tough workout by Charlton on Sunday. Being played at the Gunnersbury Park Sports Hub, admission will be free
Dulwich Hamlet v Oxford United @2pm - edged out by Watford in the battle to get out of the third tier, Oxford should have too much for the Hamlet if they send a strong side to Champion Hill
Fulham v London Bees @230pm - although they came third in the fifth tier last season, the Cottagers finished 22 points behind champions Worthing to miss promotion by a considerable margin. On Sunday they welcome a club who narrowly missed relegation from the third tier. The Bees crushed Southampton WFC 5-1 on Sunday and will fancy themselves here

TLFG: 17-23 July 2023

Greetings one and all and welcome to the latest edition of TLFG.

Since watching Actonians Reserves last Sunday, I've had a quiet week on the live football front.

As a non-league fan, one of the highlights of the last few days has been the release of the fixtures in the so-called trident leagues - Isthmian, Northern Premier and Southern - which means we now know where all our teams will be heading in the top eight tiers so you can get planning your trips.

I'm hoping to finally get to watch my first match in Scotland next month as I secured tickets for Celtic's pre-season game against Athletic Bilbao on 1 August - officially it's a testimonial for James Forrest.

QPR make their first visit to the new Plough Lane on Saturday - tickets

I had tickets to watch Celtic once before but travelled all the way up to Glasgow to watch them play Motherwell shortly before New Year about 20 years ago, only to see the match snowed off!

The week ahead sees the Women's World Cup get underway in Australia and New Zealand and my eldest daughter is set to take part in a feature about it on Friday.

She and her team-mates have to report to Actonians HQ for 6am to appear on ITV News presumably during Good Morning Britain.

England's record goalscorer Ellen White is set to be in attendance and there'll be free food for the kids as they've got to be there all morning!

Whether she gets on TV remains to be seen but she should get to meet a Lioness whatever happens.

Lastly this week, many thanks to Chris H and Stefan F for their donations to TLFG's coffee-drinking fund - I really, really appreciate it.

THE WEEK AHEAD

There are friendlies to be enjoyed every day this week with Crystal Palace and West Ham United both representing the Premier League again.

Several EFL clubs will be in action too whilst many pro clubs will be sending out development teams to play non-league clubs as well.

Outside London, I've included some extra games featuring pro clubs that might be of interest too.

Monday 17 July

A bit further afield
Southall v Kings Langley @730pm - there's nothing on within the M25 but just beyond its western fringe, the 'All welcome Southern League club Kings Langley to their new home at Burnham FC
Maidenhead United v Bermuda @7pm - if you go a little further west, then this women's game with an international flavour might be more to your liking. This one is being played at Holyport FC
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Tuesday 18 July

Friendlies
Sutton United v Millwall @745pm - with back-to-back wins over Havant & Waterlooville and Reading, the U's have had a good week. Things should get considerably tougher on Tuesday, though, when they face Championship opposition. The Lions began their pre-season preparations with a 2-0 win at Gillingham on Saturday. Tickets are £12
Boreham Wood v Chelsea XI @730pm - after playing fairly strong teams from West Ham and Brentford last week, the Wood next welcome a side from Stamford Bridge. With the first team playing a match in the USA two days later, this is likely to be no more than an U21 team. Tickets are £15
Enfield Town v Tottenham Hotspur U21 @730pm - the Towners narrowly lost 1-0 to QPR's youngsters on Saturday and will hope to push this Spurs side close too. Tickets are £10

A bit further afield
Gillingham v Charlton Athletic @745pm - several EFL clubs are in action in the home counties on Tuesday night. For me, the pick of the games is this sort of derby between the League Two Gills and the Addicks from the division above. Tickets are £12

--------------------------------------------------------------

Wednesday 19 July

A bit further afield
Crawley Town v Crystal Palace @745pm - there are a small number of non-league friendlies in London on Wednesday but nothing particularly mouthwatering. The most eye-catching action takes place just outside the capital with Premier League Palace's game in Sussex being the most notable. Tickets are £10 but there aren't many left
---------------------------------------------------------------

Thursday 20 July

Friendlies
AFC Croydon Athletic v Lingfield @730pm - on Saturday the Rams suffered their first defeat of the Zaha/Stormzy ownership era. Losing 2-0 to Sevenoaks from the level above was no disgrace though. On Thursday they welcome a team from the same level and will hope to return to form
VCD Athletic v Ramsgate @745pm - these sides were both in the Isthmian South East last season and both suffered play-off heartbreak at opposite ends of the table. Ramsgate finished second and didn't get promoted whilst VCD lost to local rivals Phoenix Sports to get relegated. The visitors have spruced up their facilities in recent seasons, have really invested in getting the local community involved and should be ones to watch again this year

----------------------------------------------------------------

Friday 21 July

Friendly
Erith Town v Welling United U23 @745pm - the Dockers host the only game in town on Friday as they welcome a young side from one of their neighbouring clubs

A bit further afield
Oxford United v Swansea City @730pm - the biggest game elsewhere sees a couple of EFL sides do battle at the Kassam Stadium. The visitors, who play in the Championship, should start as favourites. Tickets are £12

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Saturday 22 July

Friendlies
AFC Wimbledon v QPR @3pm - unbeaten in three games and yet to concede a goal, pre-season has begun well for the Dons. Next up they face the R's who are just back from a tour of Austria. Gareth Ainsworth's side lost 3-0 to Slavia Prague but then beat Austrian second-tier club Vorwarts Steyr 2-1. I think the last time these two played was a pre-season game five years ago when QPR scored a very late goal to win 1-0 at Kingsmeadow - this will be their first visit to the new Plough Lane. Tickets are £14
Dagenham & Redbridge v West Ham United @3pm - we've got an east London derby at the Chigwell Construction Stadium which looks well worth a watch. It is listed as a first-team game on West Ham's website but coming just four days after they play Spurs in Australia, you'd expect David Moyes to rest a few players. Tickets are £15
Wealdstone v Charlton Athletic @3pm - last season the Stones kept their heads above water to survive another year in the fifth tier. They'll hope to build on that this season and face a decent test here in the form of the League One Addicks. Tickets are £10
Dartford v Gillingham @1pm - the Gills continue their pre-season campaign against local opposition with a tricky trip to Princes Park. The Darts travelled all the way up to Gateshead to play 2012 FA Vase winners Dunston UTS on Saturday and drew 2-2. Tickets are £10
Barnet v Chelsea XI @3pm - the Bees drew 1-1 with MK Dons as part of their Community Day on Saturday. Next up they take on a young Blues side who will look to impress whilst the first team continue their US tour. Tickets are £12
Bromley v Millwall from 1130am - the Ravens have kicked off pre-season with two highly entertaining draws against Dulwich Hamlet and a young Fulham side. On Saturday they face two sides from fellow south Londoners Millwall in an U18 and U21 doubleheader. The Lions' U18s will play Bromley's U21s at 1130 before their U21s take on the hosts' senior team. Tickets are £15

A bit further afield
Reading v Southampton @3pm - this would appear to be the pick of the games in the matches just outside London. Both sides had terrible 2022/23 campaigns and got relegated - Southampton slipped out of the Premier League whilst the Royals ended up in League One. The Royals suffered this fate more for their off-field performance rather than what happened on it with several points deducted for financial failings. Sadly those problems haven't gone away and the club are still in a mess - it's almost a case of see them in action while you still can. Tickets are £10 in advance of £15 on the day
--------------------------------------------------------

Sunday 23 July

Friendlies
London Bees v Southampton WFC @130pm - it's all about women's football on Sunday with the third-tier Bees the highest ranked team on show. Southampton WFC are the original women's club from the Hampshire city and have no connection to the men's team - they play in the fourth tier
Charlton Athletic U21 v Actonians @3pm - after losing a very entertaining match against Millwall 3-2, the A's next travel to south-east London to play the Addicks' youngsters. I've had it confirmed that spectators will be allowed in to Charlton's training ground from 245pm which is quite a rarity in my experience
Dulwich Hamlet v AFC Wimbledon @2pm - there's a decent looking south London derby at Champion Hill too. As mentioned last week, the Dons are seen by many as favourites to win their fourth-tier division this season whilst the Hamlet will hope to push for promotion from the fifth

TLFG: 10-16 July 2023

Greetings everyone and welcome to TLFG's preview of week three of pre-season.

Arguably the biggest news in the London football community this week was the untimely death of Millwall owner John Berylson in a car crash in the USA.

Involved with the club since 2006, he was hugely admired by many people at the Championship side and presided over some of their most successful times.

After narrowly missing out on the play-offs last season, it will be very interesting to see how they fare this time.

Barnet host Premier League side Crystal Palace on Tuesday - tickets

In other news, I finally got to watch my first live match of the new campaign.

As regular readers will know, I was planning to go and watch Actonians play Real Bedford at Rectory Park but the visitors pulled out and I went to watch the reserves play Leatherhead at Gunnersbury Park instead.

The reserves had won back-to-back promotions to find themselves heading into their first ever season in the women's sixth tier alongside some good sides including local rivals Brentford's first team.

Leatherhead finished bottom last season so would provide the newcomers with a good idea of how tough this new level was likely to be.

I arrived around five minutes late to discover that the visitors had already scored after a rare lapse by one of the A's best defenders.

Featuring a couple of first teamers who were returning from injury, the A's were always competitive and drew level with a fine individual strike from Molly O'Reilly.

Unperturbed, Leatherhead kept going and found themselves 2-1 up at the break after a fine move down the right found a well-placed striker who headed them back in front.

With a squad of only 12, Actonians' players didn't enjoy much rotation and signs of fatigue started to show but they still managed two further goals from captain and last season's top scorer Kayleigh Peters as they hung on to win 3-2.

Overall it was a good workout for both teams. With both teams hitting the woodwork on numerous occasions, the score could've been very different.

I hope you've enjoyed some good games this week and have your eye on a few more over the coming days.

Lastly this week, many thanks to Jay B from Kingston for his donation to TLFG's coffee-drinking fund - I really, really appreciate it.

THE WEEK AHEAD

There are friendlies to be enjoyed every day this week with Crystal Palace and West Ham United becoming the first Premier League clubs looking likely to field some first-team players this summer.

Several Premier League and EFL clubs will also be sending out development teams to play some non-league clubs.

Outside London, I've included some extra games featuring EFL clubs that might also be of interest.

As always, please make sure you check with clubs before you travel just in case a game has been called off or the venue or kick-off time has changed - this is highly possible for some of the lower non-league clubs. Also, please let me know if anything is wrong or missing.

TLFG DAILY DIGEST
In the following section, I list what are in my opinion the most notable games of the week and give some brief reasons for my choice. Check the maps above for kick-off times, ticket info and directions.

Monday 10 July

Friendly
Boreham Wood v West Ham United @7pm - the Hammers become the first Premier League team to field a side ahead of the new season as they travel to Meadow Park, home of fifth tier Boreham Wood. The hosts always put together a strong pre-season programme and managed a solid 0-0 draw with Championship side Watford on Wednesday. Tickets are £15
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Tuesday 11 July

Friendlies
Barnet v Crystal Palace @730pm - after managing a 1-1 draw with Norwich City in their first home friendly last week, the Bees next welcome top-flight opposition in the form of the Eagles. Listed as a first-team fixture on the Palace website, the south London club should be expected to field some decent players. Tickets are £12
Wealdstone v MK Dons @745pm - after an entertaining 3-2 win over Southern League Bracknell Town on Saturday, the Stones should face a far sterner test in the form of League Two side MK Dons on Tuesday. Tickets are £10

A bit further afield
Havant & Waterlooville v Sutton United @745pm - the U's get their pre-season underway with a trip to Hampshire to play H&W. Four years ago, these two were in the same division but now they're two apart. Tickets are £10
Bognor Regis Town v Portsmouth @745pm - if you fancy a midweek trip to the Sussex seaside then this game could be for you. The hosts finished in the bottom half of the Isthmian Premier last season and will hope for a lot better this time. Pompey are one of the biggest clubs in League One and will be keen to escape it. Tickets are £10
Hitchin Town v Stevenage @745pm - to the north of London there's a Hertfordshire derby as the Southern League's Canaries welcome Stevenage who won promotion to League One last season. Tickets are £13
Brentwood Town v Leyton Orient @745pm - after drawing 0-0 at Billericay Town on Friday, the O's continue their tour of Essex with a trip to another Isthmian League club. After winning the League Two title last season, the visitors should have more than enough to win here. Tickets will be available on the door
East Grinstead Town v Crawley Town @730pm - the visitors finished just three points above the League Two relegation zone to narrowly avoid becoming a non-league side again. The hosts had an underwhelming midtable finish in the eighth tier Isthmian League South East

--------------------------------------------------------------

Wednesday 12 July

Friendlies
Boreham Wood v Brentford XI @730pm - with only a day's rest, the Wood are back in action again on Wednesday. With this game not featuring on the Bees' website as an official first team or B team game, they're likely to field a very young/experimental team for this one
Metropolitan Police v AFC Wimbledon @745pm - the same can't be said of the Dons who have this match listed as a first-team game. The League Two side began pre-season with a 1-0 win over Reading in Spain on Saturday so this trip to Imber Court will mark a significant shift in pace. The Met have been really competitive in the Southern League in recent seasons but stunned many in May when they applied for voluntary relegation to the eighth tier
AFC Wimbledon Women v Ebbsfleet United @730pm - after finishing as runners-up to Hashtag United in the women's fourth tier last season, the Dons will be highly fancied to go one better this season. Their pre-season begins against Ebbsfleet who finished runners-up to Worthing in the division below last year and will also hope to be challenging again this time. This is being played at Carshalton Athletic
---------------------------------------------------------------

Thursday 13 July

Friendlies
Erith Town v Lewes @730pm - since beginning their new groundshare at Bayliss Avenue, the Dockers have produced some highly entertaining games. Beating landlords SC Thamesmead 3-2 and drawing 5-5 with FC Elmstead, we're all hoping for plenty more goals here. However, the Rooks play two divisions above them and should provide a much tougher evening
Dulwich Hamlet Women v Rising Ballers @745pm - if women's football is more your thing, then head to Champion Hill for the Hamlet's first pre-season game

----------------------------------------------------------------

Friday 14 July

Friendly
Hanwell Town v Wycombe Wanderers XI @745pm - the Geordies ramp up their pre-season preparations with a visit from a Chairboys squad. The Buckinghamshire club missed out on a League One play-off place last season and are starting their first full season without long-serving boss Gareth Ainsworth who left for QPR back in the spring

A bit further afield
Slough Town v Brentford XI @745pm - the Bees' experimental side are on the road again on Friday when they make the short trip to Berkshire to play the Rebels. Their modern Arbour Park ground is worth a visit and very accessible by all forms of transport

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Saturday 15 July

Friendlies
Sutton United v Reading @3pm - the U's welcome a very troubled club to Gander Green Lane on Saturday. Relegated from the Championship last season following a points deduction for financial issues, the Royals received a winding up petition for unpaid tax bills last month as their problems continued. Losing to League Two's AFC Wimbledon in a friendly on Saturday, it shouldn't get any easier here. Tickets are £12
Barnet v MK Dons from 12pm - one of the highlights of the afternoon will be the Bees' community day which will feature a doubleheader for the men's and women's teams of both clubs. The men's game kicks off at 3pm, following London Bees' match against their Dons female counterparts at 12pm. All the fun initially starts at 10am with loads for all the family to enjoy. Tickets (covering both matches) are £12
Bromley v Fulham XI @3pm - there's another doubleheader at Hayes Lane where the Ravens' U23 side get the action underway at 12pm against SCEFL side Fisher. This is followed at 3pm by the first team taking on a side from Craven Cottage
Enfield Town v QPR XI @3pm - the Towners just missed out on a play-off place in the Isthmian Premier last season and should be expected to challenge again. On Saturday they welcome a development side from Loftus Road. The young R's players lost 3-2 to a US Air Force XI on Friday
Clapton CFC v FC United of Manchester from 2pm - like Barnet, CCFC are also hosting a doubleheader. In their case it's against the men's and women's teams of FCUM. Being played at the Old Spotted Dog, which is London's oldest ground, over 800 tickets have already been taken so move fast if you want to get one

A bit further afield
Northampton Town v Leicester City @3pm - just under an hour from London by train, Northampton is easy enough to reach for an away day from the capital. The League One hosts welcome a club who've won the Premier League and FA Cup in the last seven years but who find themselves starting this campaign in the Championship. Tickets appear to be £16
Gillingham v Millwall @1pm - having lost owner John Berylson in a tragic accident last week, the Lions will make the short journey to Kent for their first friendly of the summer. Having narrowly missed a place in the Championship play-offs, they will start this match against League Two opponents as strong favourites. Tickets are £12
Ebbsfleet United v Colchester United @1pm - after romping to the National League South title last season, the Fleet find themselves preparing for another season back in the fifth tier for the first time since 2020. Colchester had looked doomed at one point last season but rallied and kept their place in League Two. Tickets are £12
Woking v AFC Wimbledon @12pm - the Cards finished fourth in the National League last season but came unstuck in the play-offs. In fact their good season saw them finish only seven places below the Dons who struggled in League Two - this should be close. Tickets are £10
Havant & Waterlooville v Portsmouth @1pm - League One Pompey travel to local NLS club H&W for what could be a hotly contested derby. Tickets are £10
St Albans City v Cambridge United @1pm - Clarence Park is one of my favourite non-league grounds in the south-east and is, therefore, well worth a visit. On Saturday they welcome a Cambridge side who avoided relegation from League One on the final day of the season. Tickets are £10
Three Bridges v Crawley Town @3pm - after playing East Grinstead in midweek, Crawley continue their tour of local clubs with a trip to Isthmian League opposition. Tickets are £10
--------------------------------------------------------

Sunday 16 July

Friendlies
Actonians v Millwall Lionesses @2pm - after seeing their opening friendly against Real Bedford cancelled, the A's will try again against more illustrious opposition at Rectory Park. The hosts actually play a level above the Lionesses so you'd expect them to get a win for their new boss Harry Berkeley
Fulham v Portsmouth @230pm - the Cottagers came third in the women's fifth tier but missed promotion by a whopping 22 points as Worthing and Ebbsfleet fought hard for the title. Pompey, on the other hand, also enjoyed a top-four finish but in the third tier so they will start as strong favourites

TLFG: 3-9 July 2023

Greetings one and all and welcome to the second week of pre-season here in London.

It might not surprise you to learn that I didn't attend any live sporting events this week, although saying that, I did make it my daughters' sports day.

I don't know about you, but I always dread these and the pressure to do the parents' race in particular.

I usually always do take part but I always come last despite being quite fit and sporty - I'm not a sprinter, give me 20km and I'll probably manage a podium finish.

Thankfully help was required walking the nursery children back to the school and my wife took part instead, claiming a very impressive bronze in the egg and spoon race.

One of the biggest games of the week takes place at Meadow Park - tickets

Have you taken part yet this summer? Did you win or join the glorious failures club with the likes of me?

Getting back to the football, this week's biggest games are mainly in midweek with four EFL sides in action over the next seven days.

My first game is hopefully going to be Actonians' pre-season opener against Real Bedford on Sunday although I might try and watch Harrow's game at Haringey on Saturday too but it's the school fete that afternoon.

Lastly this week, many thanks to long-time reader Nick G from London for his donation to TLFG's coffee-drinking fund - I really, really appreciate it.

THE WEEK AHEAD

There are friendlies to be enjoyed every day this week with EFL sides Charlton Athletic, Leyton Orient, Norwich City and Watford all in action in and around London.

Dulwich Hamlet welcome German opposition Altona 93 to Champion Hill for a friendly with a European flavour.

There's also an international friendly between WUFA member Chagos Islands and the Falkland Islands at South Park FC in Reigate on Monday.

Monday 3 July

Friendly
Athletic Newham v New Salamis @tbc - there's not much on on Monday in London but this is definitely the pick of the action. The ninth-tier hosts enjoyed a 2-1 win at Harpenden Town in their first pre-season game on Saturday whilst the visitors, who play a level above, triumphed 4-1 at Wembley. However, I've not been able to confirm the venue or kick-off time for this one - hopefully all will become clear on Monday

A bit further afield
Chagos Islands v Falkland Islands @730pm - just to the south of London, there's a bit of international football in Reigate where South Park FC play host to representative teams from these islands. Tickets are £3
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Tuesday 4 July

Friendlies
Barnet v Norwich City @730pm - one of the biggest games of the week takes place at The Hive on Tuesday. The Bees enjoyed a top-five finish in the National League last season but lost to local rivals Boreham Wood in the play-offs. Championship club Norwich had a hugely underwhelming season, finishing 13th following their relegation from the Premier League. Tickets are £12
AFC Croydon Athletic v Bridon Ropes @730pm - the new Zaha/Stormzy era began with a 2-0 win over VCD Athletic on Saturday. Next up the Rams face Bridon Ropes who play a level below them
Barking v Hashtag United @745pm - the Blues recorded a solid 4-1 win over 10th-tier Lewisham Borough in their opening friendly at the weekend. Things should get significantly tougher here when they welcome a team from two levels above them
Bedfont Sports v Beaconsfield Town @730pm - back in the ninth tier Combined Counties League after a desperately disappointing season in the Isthmian League, Bedfont Sports will hope to bounce back as soon as the possibly can. After an entertaining 2-2 draw with local rivals Hanworth on Saturday, they welcome Southern League Beaconsfield who play two levels above them
Erith Town v SC Thamesmead @730pm - the Dockers announced recently that they'll be groundsharing with SC Thamesmead this season, hence the reason for this match

A bit further afield
Ascot United v Slough Town @745pm - just to the west of London, in the shadow of one of the country's most illustrious race courses, the recently crowned FA Vase and Combined Counties League champions are preparing for their first season in the Isthmian League. Fellow Berkshire club Slough, who play two levels above, should provide a stern test

Wednesday 5 July

Friendly
Boreham Wood v Watford @730pm - there's another chance to see a Championship side in action on Wednesday at Meadow Park where the Hornets kick-off their pre-season campaign. Like Norwich, Watford had a very disappointing season and will look for much better this time round - although how many managers they get through is anyone's guess. The Wood made the National League play-offs last season and will hope to challenge again. Tickets are £15

Thursday 6 July

Friendly
Brook House v Kensington Dragons @730pm - this is the only game I'm aware of on Thursday and it takes place at Alec Reed Academy in Northolt. Tenth tier Brook House should start as marginal favourites against their 11th tier opponents

----------------------------------------------------------------

Friday 7 July

Friendlies
QPR U21 v US Air Force U21 @3pm - the most eye-catching game of the day probably won't be open to the public as it's taking place at the R's brand spanking new training ground at Heston. I've listed it here as I don't know for sure one way or another if you will be able to get in but given the opposition, I think it's even more unlikely than normal on security grounds
Erith & Belvedere v Punjab United @715pm - competing for the Martin Tarrant Trophy, Park View Road looks like the place to be on Friday night with live DJs, dance troops, candy floss, face painting, ice cream and more! To top it all it's only £3 to get in

A bit further afield
Billericay Town v Leyton Orient @745pm - there are a few games around the periphery of London with this one featuring the League One O's topping the bill

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Saturday 8 July

Friendlies
Dartford v Charlton Athletic @3pm - the Addicks took a strong side to Welling United on Saturday, won 4-0 and drew a huge crowd of 2,765 to Park View Road. The Darts play at the same level as the Wings and will be hoping for a similar turnout at Princes Park. Tickets are £10
Dulwich Hamlet v Altona 93 @3pm - there should also be a big crowd at Champion Hill where the Hamlet welcome their old friends from Germany. The south-east London club headed out to Hamburg five years ago for the reverse fixture and won 4-1 but they were a better side then. Also, both sides are celebrating their 130th anniversaries this year. Tickets are £12.80
Aveley v Dagenham & Redbridge @3pm - after winning the Isthmian League play-offs, the Millers find themselves in the National League South. On Saturday they welcome local rivals D&R who play one level above them
Wealdstone v Bracknell Town @2pm - after seeing their game against Rayners Lane called off at short notice, the Stones have managed to get Southern League title contenders Bracknell to step in at the last minute. Still being played at Rayners Lane's ground, it follows the 11am game between Broadfields United and Leverstock Green

--------------------------------------------------------

Sunday 9 July

Friendlies
Actonians Reserves v Leatherhead @2pm - with the A's first team having had their match against Real Bedford cancelled, the reserves now become the only show in town on Sunday. Having won the double for the last two seasons, they're a pretty decent side in their own right and are now about to play their first season in the women's sixth tier alongside Brentford's first team. The visitors finished bottom of this division last season so should be beaten. It's taking place on one of the 3G pitches in Gunnersbury Park, is free entry and it's where I plan to be
