TLFG: 25-31 July 2022

Earlier on Sunday evening I ended up contributing to a debate of BBC Radio 5 Live's famous 606 football phone-in show.

They were debating the perceived downward trend in fan behaviour at stadiums in the post-covid era, citing the appalling scenes at last summer's Euro 2020 final at Wembley and all the violent pitch invasions which took place towards the end of last season.

They wanted to know if listeners saw this as a problem, if it affected them and whether it had changed their attitudes to watching football.

People who have been reading this blog for a few months might remember me writing about my disillusionment with the match-day experience at QPR.

Fulham, Brentford and Arsenal all host La Liga clubs this weekend

The last time I went with my nine-year-old daughter in March, we were surrounded by people booing the players who took the knee, others who screamed obscenities at poorly performing players in a way that seemed far more unhinged than normal and the away fans chanting "Paedo" at one of our more senior fans who joyously wears a sombrero to games, has an old school football rattle and a horn which he blows occasionally to spur on the team.

She was understandably a bit freaked out and in no hurry to return.

On Saturday we had a chance to go back as the R's welcomed Crystal Palace to Loftus Road for their final pre-season friendly.

We didn't go.

It was close. I opened the app to buy tickets but then felt myself becoming very mildly anxious and gave up.

Will I go again this season? At full price (around £50 for my daughter and I), no way.

I might consider going alone to a cup game for a tenner but this could be a watershed moment for me.

Contrast all this with our experience at another UEFA Womens Euro 2022 game on Thursday night where the two of us headed to Brentford again for the big quarter-final derby between Germany and Austria.

There was no menace in the air at all, at any point.

Rival fans sat together, sang their anthems, waved their flags and enjoyed their night.

Regular watchers of men's football who I took to the game were struck by the difference as were families I know who wouldn't dream of going to a men's game and absolutely loved it.

I know this is entirely my problem and many people reading this will think I'm a soppy snowflake and you're probably right.

As recently as 10 years ago I would've almost certainly agreed with you, would've relished the edgier atmosphere and tribal hostility but not now.

I'm at a different point in my life, I have two young kids and the cost of living is starting to escalate fast.

I can afford to go to watch QPR but it doesn't represent good value and as a dull middle-aged Dad, I have to find value in everything!

So this season it's going to be mainly non-league, women's and QPR Reserves for me.

Despite the doom and gloom here, we all want different things out of football.

Some friends of mine took a young American relative to Loftus Road on Saturday and he loved it and I'm sure you will too but it's just not right for me at the moment.

THE WEEK AHEAD

The highlights of the next few days include the UEFA Women's Euro 2022 final, some high profile pre-season games featuring Premier League and European teams, the opening weekend of games in the EFL and some of our local non-league competitions, plus many other friendlies.

As always, please make sure you check with clubs before you travel just in case a game has been called off or the venue or kick-off time has changed - this is highly possible for some of the lower non-league clubs. Also, please let me know if anything is wrong or missing.

Details on all of this week's games can be found on the following match maps. If you've never used them before, please note that when there is more than one match at a specific ground you'll only be able to see individual match pins if you zoom right in. If you don't, the pins obscure each other and you might miss them. To avoid this, you can also scroll down the list of games on the drop down menu at the top of the map page to make sure you get all the information. Games are listed from top to bottom in date order so Monday's games (yellow pin) will appear first and Sunday's (orange pin) last. Games are also ranked in terms of status so the higher the division, the higher up the list they will appear on each day.
Also if you're unfamiliar with the English league structure I indicate the level at which an individual league sits in the national 'pyramid' with the Premier League at the top (Level 1) and various minor leagues at the bottom (Level 10). Typically a top level game will see crowds of anywhere between 20,000-60,000. These figures will gradually decline as you go down the leagues until you get to Levels 8-10 where attendances of 150 or less are most common.

It should also be noted that the top four levels are for fully professional teams. Level 5 has a mixture of professional and semi-professional teams, while Levels 6-10 will see most players paid but it will vary from no more than travel expenses at the bottom, right up to several hundred pounds a week at the top.

TLFG DAILY DIGEST
In the following section, I list, by day, what are in my opinion the most notable games of the week and give some brief reasons for my choice. Check the maps above for kick-off times, ticket info and directions.

Monday 25 July

Friendly
Carshalton Athletic v Hampton & Richmond Borough @745pm - after a goalless draw at Sutton Common Rovers on Saturday, the Robins welcome opponents from the division above. Hampton suffered a 3-1 defeat at home to QPR U23s in their last game

--------------------------------------------------------------

Tuesday 26 July

Friendlies
Barnet v Portsmouth @730pm - the Bees lost 3-1 to MK Dons at The Hive on Saturday and face an equally tough visit from Pompey on Tuesday. Tickets
Hanwell Town v QPR U23 @745pm - the R's based their women's team at the Powerday Stadium last season and have a great relationship with their geographically closest non-league club. For collectors, the Geordies have produced a programme for this game ahead of their first season in the seventh tier for many years. Tickets
Wingate & Finchley v Norwich City U23 @745pm - despite being one of the smallest clubs in the seventh tier, it's great to see W&F starting another season at that level. I'm not sure what their relationship is with the Canaries but this is a great game for them to have brought to Summers Lane. Tickets
Walthamstow v Leyton Orient @745pm - the Stow are about to begin life in the eighth tier after winning promotion to the Southern League. The O's have this listed as a first-team game on their website so should be bringing a strong squad. Tickets

--------------------------------------------------------------

Wednesday 27 July

Friendlies
Bromley v Arsenal U21 @745pm - the Ravens won the FA Trophy last season and will hope to challenge for a play-off spot this time. After narrowly losing 3-2 to Sutton United on Saturday, they next welcome a young Gunners side. Tickets
Enfield Town Ladies v West Ham United Women @745pm - the Towners suffered relegation to the fifth tier of the women's pyramid last season but have landed this high-profile game against WSL opposition. The Hammers thrashed third-tier Billericay 5-1 on Saturday so you fear for Enfield here

--------------------------------------------------------------

Thursday 28 July

Friendly
Dulwich Hamlet Women v AFC Wimbledon Women @8pm - the pick of the action for me is this women's friendly at Champion Hill. The Hamlet start as underdogs against the Dons who should be one of the favourites in the fourth tier. Tickets

----------------------------------------------------------------

Friday 29 July

Friendlies
Boreham Wood v Arsenal U23 @7pm - the Wood conclude their impressive pre-season programme with this friendly. The Gunners play most of their U23 and women's games at Meadow Park so they always send a side at this time of year. For reference, the Gunners are also fielding an XI at Slough Town the same evening. Tickets

SCEFL Premier
Erith Town v Phoenix Sports @730pm - elsewhere, in south-east London, the new season gets underway in the ninth tier. The Dockers managed a respectable seventh-place finish last year and may well start as favourites against a Phoenix side who got relegated from the Isthmian League

ECL Division 1 South
May & Baker v Cannons Wood @745pm - the hosts, who play at Aveley, begin their season in this 10th-tier division, with an interesting game against a newly promoted and re-named side who won the Essex Alliance League as DTFC
NW London v Barkingside @8pm - up at Haringey Borough's ground, NW London begin their first ever season in the 10th tier with a challenging game against the 'Side
--------------------------------------------------------------

Saturday 30 July

Friendlies
Arsenal v Sevilla @1230pm - the Gunners' big pre-season home game this year is against the side who finished fourth in Spain last year. The six-time Europa League winners are proving to be quite a draw, with the 60,000-capacity Emirates Stadium already sold out
Brentford v Real Betis @3pm - over on the west side of town, the Bees welcome the other Seville club who managed a top-five finish and won the Spanish Cup last season. With a capacity of only 17,000, it's really hard to get tickets for most of Brentford's home games so if you want to tick this ground off your list, then take your chance now as this one is on general sale
Crystal Palace v Montpellier @3pm - the Eagles conclude their pre-season by welcoming French club Montpellier. Palace finished 12th in the Premier League last season while their opponents came 13th in Ligue 1 so they should be fairly well matched. Like Brentford, tickets for Palace home games are very hard to get without membership but this is on general sale so anyone can go
Bromley v Chelsea U23 @3pm - the Ravens bring their pre-season to a close with another eye catching fixture. Having already played sides from Spurs and Arsenal, the fifth-tier club finish off with a visit from the Blues. Tickets
Dagenham & Redbridge v West Ham United U23 @3pm - we've got an east London derby to look forward to at the Chigwell Construction Stadium where the Daggers also conclude their preparations for the new National League season with a game against the Hammers. Tickets

Championship
Millwall v Stoke City @3pm - if you want some proper competitive football then the EFL kicks-off on Saturday. The Lions had a great 2021/22, finishing ninth despite having one of the smallest budgets in the division. Former Premier League club Stoke have been stuck in the Championship doldrums for four years now and missed a play-off spot by 13 points last season. The Den is never a nice place to go for a visiting team and I predict a tough afternoon for the Potters. Tickets

League Two
AFC Wimbledon v Gillingham @3pm - after a couple of years of flirting with relegation, the Dons suffered a dreadful winless run which saw them finally lose their place in League One. The Gills finished three points above them but suffered a similar fate so this season opener should be interesting. I went to the new Plough Lane a few weeks ago for an awards do and was very impressed by the stadium so I'd recommend a visit if you haven't already been. Tickets
Leyton Orient v Grimsby Town @3pm - the O's finished slap bang in the middle of the table, pretty much equidistant from the play-off and relegation zones. No doubt they'll hope for better this time. On Saturday they welcome the Mariners who won last season's National League play-off final at the nearby London Stadium. Tickets
Sutton United v Newport County @3pm - a busy day of fourth-tier action is completed by this game at Gander Green Lane. The U's missed the play-offs by just one point last season and would probably be more than happy with a repeat of the 1-0 win they managed over the Welsh club here in April. Tickets

Essex Senior League
Buckhurst Hill v Romford @3pm - this will be the newly promoted hosts' first ever game in the ninth tier following their promotion from the Eastern Counties League. It will be against Romford who've just come down from the Isthmian League so it will be interesting to see how both clubs fare in this one
Redbridge v FC Clacton @3pm - the Motormen finished third last season and missed a play-off place by two points. The former Isthmian League club must be keen to return to the eighth tier but face a tricky opponent who finished seventh
West Essex v Woodford Town @3pm - it's derby day at Wadham Lodge where Walthamstow-based club West Essex welcome their near neighbours. The hosts finished one place above Woodford last year so it should be close

SCEFL Premier
Stansfeld v Bearsted @3pm - without a ground of their own, Stansfeld finished nine points clear at the top of Division 1 to step up to the ninth tier for the first time since taking over Eltham Palace FC back in 2016. Bearsted recorded a solid midtable finish in the Premier Division so should provide a good yardstick of the level of teams the Chislehurst club will come up against this year

Women's friendly
Actonians v Corrib Rangers @11am - fancy a women's game featuring European opposition with an early kick-off which allows you to do a double? Then look no further than this game at Rectory Park in Northolt where Women's National League club Actonians welcome a side from Galway in Ireland
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sunday 31 July

UEFA Women's Euro 2022 Final
England v Germany @5pm - this highly successful tournament reaches its climax at Wembley on Sunday evening. After demolishing Sweden, the highest-ranked team in the tournament, the Lionesses will play old rivals Germany who have won this title more times than any other country. The last time the sides played in February, England won 3-1 to win the Arnold Clark Cup. Tickets have officially sold out but some will probably become available towards the end of the week

Friendly
Fulham v Villarreal @3pm - if men's football is more your thing, Premier League returnees Fulham welcome one of last season's Champions League semi-finalists from Spain. Managed by former Arsenal boss Unai Emery they also finished seventh in La Liga so should provide formidable opposition. Tickets

Women's friendly
Fulham v QPR @1045am - it's possible to get a double-helping of Cottagers action on Sunday as their women's team welcome local rivals QPR to Motspur Park

TLFG: 18-24 July 2022

After decades of waiting, I achieved a lifetime's ambition on Monday - I got to climb the Great Pagoda in Kew Gardens.

It was a thing of wonder for me as a child, standing 50m tall and totally shut to the hoi polloi that visited the botanical gardens.

However, while visiting on Monday, I noticed it was open and I could simply buy a ticket and go up.

I say simply, it's a hefty 253-step climb but the views are well worth it.

From the top, you can easily see Brentford's new stadium which is where I ended up the following day to watch the Women's Euros match between Germany and Spain - two of the tournament favourites.

Actonians U9s doing a fine job as mascots for Germany

Although this was always going to be one of the biggest nights of the tournament, it was even more important in TLFG Towers as my daughter and her Actonians U9 team-mates were all set to be player escorts.

Dropped off four hours before kick-off, they were allocated Germany after losing a game of rock, paper, scissors to another group of girls who chose to represent Spain.

It turned out to be a fortuitous turn of events as they ended up meeting three former Germany internationals in the build-up - World Cup, Olympics and Euros (x3) winner Anja Mittag, current U17 coach and TV pundit Julia Simic and Jennifer Zietz who won the Bundesliga with Turbine Potsdam six times.

With shoes, socks, flags and clappers all autographed, the girls headed out onto the pitch to perform their duties.

Sadly because of Covid, they no longer have much direct interaction with the players and stand a few metres in front of them.To see photos of my daughter in the shadow of Alexandra Popp, Merle Frohms and eventual player of the match Marina Hegering was quite something.

Given England's rivalry with Germany, it was weird to want them to win but when your daughter's representing them, then it kind of affects you that way.

Sheffield, Hilltop, Budapesti AK & Corinthian Casuals are taking part

Although Spain dominated all the possession, passing and shooting stats, it was Germany who still managed to win 2-0 and a final against the Lionesses now looks like a strong possibility.

Saying that, England now have a very challenging quarter-final against Spain and Germany have a tricky derby against a tough Austria side who don't concede many goals.

This second quarter-final is going to be at Brentford on Thursday and UEFA have put some more tickets on sale this weekend - I've got mine!

For many EFL clubs, this is the final week of pre-season so several have decent friendlies lined up.

We also have the incredibly unusual and highly intriguing Egri Erbstein Tournament to look forward to at the weekend but more on that in the 'Daily Digest' below.

The highlights of the next few days include the UEFA Women's Euro 2022, pre-season games featuring Premier League, EFL, many of our local non-league sides and a few women's teams too.

TLFG DAILY DIGEST
In the following section, I list, by day, what are in my opinion the most notable games of the week and give some brief reasons for my choice. Check the maps above for kick-off times, ticket info and directions.

Tuesday 12 July

Friendlies
AFC Wimbledon v Reading @745pm - after drawing 0-0 with League One side Ipswich on Saturday, the Dons next welcome some Championship opposition. The Royals drew with West Ham in their last match. Tickets
Leyton Orient v Portsmouth @7pm - if you're after a slightly early kick-off, then this match at Brisbane Road could be for you. The O's enjoyed a 3-1 win over Spurs' U21 side on Saturday while Pompey won at Gillingham. Tickets UPDATE - NOW BEHIND CLOSED DOORS
Sutton United v Woking @745pm - the U's rekindle an old non-league rivalry with the Cards on Tuesday night. Two titans of the Surrey football scene, they've won the county cup 28 times between them. As far as I can tell, this match is pay on the gate
Dulwich Hamlet v Millwall U23 @730pm - a crowd of over 1,600 made their way to Champion Hill to see the hosts draw with a young side from Arsenal on Saturday. You'd think there'd be a healthy attendance for this one too as the Lions are the nearest pro club to the Hamlet. Tickets
Haringey Borough v QPR U23 @815pm - actually playing on White Hart Lane (unlike Spurs), I always enjoy a visit to Coles Park. They've won their last three friendlies so come into this in reasonable form whilst the R's youngsters have yet to register a victory. This should be pay on the gate

A bit further afield
Gillingham v Crystal Palace @7pm - with the Eagles' first team on tour overseas, this should have largely been an U23 side. However, a significant number of the club's star players didn't travel as it's believed they weren't vaccinated for Covid so you could see the likes of Wilfrid Zaha, Christian Benteke or Eberechi Eze. Tickets
Stevenage v Derby County @730pm - relegated to League One and without manager Wayne Rooney who decided to move on, the Rams are beginning a new era under the ownership of property developer David Clowes. Tickets
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wednesday 20 July

Friendlies
Millwall v Hammarby @7pm - I think I'm right in saying that this is our first bit of European club action this summer. Hailing from Stockholm, Hammarby are currently 13 games into their league campaign and fifth in the table in the Swedish top flight. The Lions have therefore done pretty well to get them to come over at relatively short notice - the fact they share the same sponsor (Huski Chocolate), might have something to do with it. Tickets
Wealdstone v QPR @745pm - Grosvenor Vale will play host to the R's first team in what is the highlight of the Stones' pre-season. With many supporters having a soft spot for both teams, it's no surprise that the match has sold out
Bromley v Tottenham Hotspur U21 @745pm - after tough fixtures against Enfield Town and Leyton Orient, Spurs' youngsters face some National League opposition in their next game. Tickets
AFC Wimbledon v Portsmouth @8pm - there's also a decent looking women's friendly taking place at Carshalton Athletic's ground.  The Dons should be one of the frontrunners in the women's fourth tier this season so a match against Pompey from the level above should provide them with a good test
------------------------------------------------------------

Thursday 21 July

UEFA Women's Euro 2022 Quarter Final
Germany v Austria @8pm - after three capacity crowds in the group stage, Brentford's ground prepares to host its final game of the tournament and it's a decent one. This second of the four quarter-finals is a big derby between Germany, the most successful country in the competition's history, and neighbours Austria. Aside from England, the German side has been incredibly impressive, winning all three games and not conceding a goal. The Austrians have caused a bit of an upset by qualifying ahead of Norway but they've been very tough to beat and have only conceded one themselves. Germany should be strong favourites but I can see this possibly going all the way to penalties. Some extra tickets went on sale on Saturday

--------------------------------------------------------------

Friday 22 July

Friendlies
AFC Croydon Athletic v Brentford B @730pm - there are a couple of games on Friday night with this one featuring the Hamlet's new B side marginally the more interesting of the two

----------------------------------------------------------------

Saturday 23 July
Friendlies
Watford v Southampton @3pm - one of the more unusual games of the pre-season period sees the Hornets take on the Saints at Wealdstone's ground in Ruislip. It is a first-team game for both sides but the pitch at Vicarage Road is being relaid and the game is being played here instead. Given the very limited capacity of 2,500, only supporters with a pre-existing Fan ID can get a ticket
QPR v Crystal Palace @3pm - when I first heard the R's big pre-season home game was going to be against Palace Reserves I was pretty disappointed. However, as I mentioned above, the players that the visitors have to choose from are actually pretty impressive so this could be quite a bit better than I first thought. Tickets
Millwall v Ipswich Town @3pm - after the excitement of welcoming European opposition to The Den earlier in the week, the Lions come down to earth with a far more mundane opponent from League One. The Tractor Boys have won on two of their last three league visits to this part of London but it's been nearly four years since they were last in the neighbourhood. Tickets
Charlton Athletic v Swansea City @3pm - a bit of a random one but if you're a fan of either club or want to tick The Valley off your list, then you're in line for a good afternoon. Tickets
AFC Wimbledon v Oxford United @3pm - again, nothing too exciting about this one but it gives you the chance to check out Plough Lane which must be among the finest stadiums in the fourth tier. Tickets
Dagenham & Redbridge v Leyton Orient @3pm - in east London there's a local derby to look forward to. These sides were playing each other in the National League until fairly recently so it should be close here. Tickets
Egri Erbstein Tournament
One of the undoubted highlights of the whole pre-season period is this tournament taking place over the whole weekend in Tolworth. It all kicks off at midday when hosts Corinthian Casuals take on Hilltop in the first semi-final before Hungarian club Budapesti AK play Sheffield, the oldest football club in the world, at 4pm. Tickets are available by the day or for the whole weekend
A bit further afield
Luton Town v West Ham United @3pm - if things had gone better for the Hatters in the play-offs then this would've been a Premier League fixture this season but sadly it didn't. If you haven't been to Kenilworth Road, you really must - it's old, unique and not likely to be around for too much longer. Tickets
Reading v Brighton & Hove Albion @3pm - there's set to be some more Premier League talent on show in Berkshire where the Royals welcome the Seagulls. Tickets
Doubleheader
Just beyond the M25's Essex border, Billericay Town are hosting back-to-back games featuring their women's and men's teams. First up, the women take on WSL side West Ham United at 130pm before the men's side play Tottenham Hotspur U21s at 630pm. This late kick-off gives you the chance to pair it with a 3pm game on the east side of town if the women's match isn't for you. Tickets
--------------------------------------------------------------
Sunday 24 July
Egri Erbstein Tournament
The action gets underway at 12pm as the losers of the two ties on Saturday meet in a third-place play-off. The final will take place at 4pm. As mentioned above, tickets can be bought by the day or for the whole weekend
Friendlies
Cray Wanderers v Maidstone United @3pm - it's definitely a day for football historians in London. If you can't watch Sheffield, the oldest club in the world, playing in the Egri Erbstein Tournament then you could head south-east to Bromley to watch Cray who are the oldest club in the capital. They face a tough match against the fifth-tier Stones.UPDATE - MATCH OFF
Fulham v AFC Wimbledon @2pm - the pick of the women's action, in my opinion, is this derby at Motspur Park. In men's football you'd have the Cottagers as strong favourites but in women's football, it's the Dons who play at a higher level

TLFG: 11-17 July 2022

So the women's Euros are off and running and I think it's fair to say they've produced some decent entertainment.

On Friday night, I paid my first visit to Brentford's new ground to see Denmark to take on Germany - one of the true powerhouses of women's football.

After a short ride on the 237 bus down from Shepherds Bush, my daughter and I were greeted by friendly stewards and tooled up with a clapper and a flag (the jury's out on clappers but kids tend to love them and they make a great free souvenir).

Quick service at the food & drink kiosk further boosted my favourable impression of the evening and then we were in.

A packed stadium enjoys Germany v Denmark

The Brentford Community Stadium is great for what it is - compact, modern and with great transport links, you can't really go wrong.

However, it is small and doesn't look like it can hold 17,000 people - not great for the Premier League but absolutely perfect for this tournament.

This match and the other three it's due to host are all sold out and the atmosphere is really good.

Once things got underway, it was terribly one sided with Germany having nuemrous chances before they finally broke the deadlock in the 21st minute.

The second half was even worse as they found the next on three further occasions.

The eight time former winners were favourites here but Denmark offered very little indeed and don't look like making the quarter-finals.

On Sunday I extended my run of women's games to two by heading out to Northolt to watch Actonians play their first pre-season friendly against the recently renamed Selsey who play in a parallel division of the fourth tier.

I got there late but I was informed Ash and Neil H, two stalwarts of the West London football-watching scene, that is was still 0-0.

It was a tight game but the hosts ultimately picked up a deserved 2-1 win, despite playing without a recognised goalkeeper for most of the second half.

Actonians began pre-season with a 2-1 win over Selsey

Having been inspired by the physical prowess on the field, I decided to run home via the canal and bit off a bit more than I could chew - 15km in the heat wasn't a great idea but I made it.

More women's football beckons for me this week as I had back to Brentford on Tuesday for the crucial Germany v Spain match which should go a long way to deciding who finishes top of Group B.

It's an even bigger night in our household as my daughter will be one of the player escorts or mascots as they were known in my day.

Sadly her direct involvement with the players looks like it will be much reduced for this tournament presumably for Covid reasons, which is a bit of a shame.

 THE WEEK AHEAD

The highlights of the next few days include the UEFA Women's Euro 2022, pre-season games featuring Premier League, EFL, many of our local non-league sides and a few women's teams too.

As always, please make sure you check with clubs before you travel just in case a game has been called off or the venue or kick-off time has changed - this is highly possible for some of the lower non-league clubs. Also, please let me know if anything is wrong or missing.

Monday 11 July

Friendly
Carshalton Athletic v Chipstead @745pm - the week begins with this match in south London between two Isthmian League clubs. The Robins managed a solid 12th-place finish in the Premier Division last year and will start as favourites against the Chips who play a level below

--------------------------------------------------------------

Tuesday 12 July

UEFA Women's Euro 2022
Germany v Spain @8pm - one of the biggest matches of the opening round takes place at Brentford's ground on Tuesday evening. Germany have the best record in the competition's history whilst Spain are the current bookies' favourites. Both scored four during convincing wins in their opening games so it could be a classic, with one of them likely to play England in the next round. Tickets are sold out but check UEFA's website for the latest

Friendlies
Boreham Wood v West Ham United @7pm - after entertaining a strong Brentford side on Saturday, the Wood next welcome a squad from the Hammers. The visitors are also sending a team to Ipswich the same night so they won't be at full strength here. Tickets are available in advance
Dartford v Millwall @745pm - after suffering a 6-1 defeat at home to Charlton on Saturday, the Darts welcome potentially even stronger opposition in the form of Championship club Millwall. Nearly 3,000 fans packed into Princes Park on Saturday so it should be pretty busy here too. Tickets are only £10 and you're strongly advised to buy in advance
Dulwich Hamlet v Sutton United @745pm - these two old south London rivals must have played many times over the years but I'm struggling to find a more recent competitive match between them than an FA Cup match in 2011 which the U's won 5-1. Since then, Dulwich and Sutton have both enjoyed two promotions, meaning that the latter are now an EFL side. Tickets are available
Hampton & Richmond Borough v Charlton Athletic U23 @745pm - after letting in a late equaliser to draw 1-1 with Hayes & Yeading on Saturday, H&R play their first pre-season game back on home soil on Tuesday. The Addicks youngsters should provide a decent test for Gary McCann's men. Tickets are available
Enfield Town v Tottenham Hotspur U21 @7pm - when the Towners moved to their current ground in 2011, just after I launched this blog, Spurs sent a side to officially open it. Fast forward nearly 11 years and they're coming back for a highly anticipated fixture. Tickets are available
AFC Wimbledon v Sutton United @8pm - if you want a women's game, then head to Carshalton Athletic where one of the favourites for the FA WNL Division 1 SE title welcomes a local rival for a derby

A bit further afield
Colchester United v Charlton Athletic @730pm - if you're prepared to head out of London, then this match in Essex between sides in League Two and League One could be for you. They don't play that often but over the years, they've managed to end up even on the head-to-head with seven wins apiece and four draws. The last match in 2016 ended in a 1-1 draw. Tickets are available
Maidstone United v Leyton Orient @745pm - the Stones won the NLS last season to return to the fifth tier. On Tuesday they welcome a squad from the O's. According to the east London club's website, they're sending a side to Potters Bar Town the same night so you'll have to pick which one is better for you. Tickets are available on the gate
Woking v Swindon Town @7pm - after an entertaining 3-2 win over Arsenal U23s, the Cards next welcome Swindon to the Laithwaite Community Stadium. The Robins made it to the League Two play-offs last season so should start as favourites
Farnborough v AFC Wimbledon @715pm - the hosts won the Southern League play-offs last season to make it into the NLS. Sadly for the Dons, they suffered relegation to League Two and should be keen to put that disappointment behind them. Tickets are available

--------------------------------------------------------------

Wednesday 13 July

Friendly
Sutton Common Rovers v Whitehawk @745pm - after seeing their match against Crawley cancelled last week, SCR will hope for more luck against a side from a parallel division of the Isthmian League

A bit further afield
Stevenage v Peterborough United @730pm - just to the north of London, there's an all-EFL clash that could take your fancy. The hosts narrowly avoided relegation from League Two last season, whilst Posh weren't so lucky and finished in the Championship's bottom three. Tickets are available

--------------------------------------------------------------

Thursday 14 July

Friendly
Shepherds Bush v Harrow Borough @745pm - the side from W12 formed last season and immediately won promotion from the 12th tier Middlesex County League Division 1, despite playing way out near Uxbridge at Brunel University. This match is at Rectory Park in Northolt and I think it will be their home for the coming season. Harrow play four divisions above but I think it's widely recognised that Shepherds Bush are way too good for the level they play at - it should be interesting

----------------------------------------------------------------

Friday 15 July

Friendlies
Boreham Wood v Chelsea U23 @7pm - the Wood always put a good pre-season together and following on from Brentford and West Ham, Chelsea send a side to Meadow Park. Tickets are available
Hendon v Arsenal XI @730pm - a few miles to the south on the same train line, the Greens play host to a young Gunners team. Their last home friendly ended in a 4-0 loss to Wealdstone so they'll be hoping for better this time. Tickets are available

A bit further afield
Colchester United v Millwall @730pm - after hosting Charlton earlier in the week, the Jobserve Community Stadium welcomes the Lions for some Friday night football. Tickets are available
Ebbsfleet United v West Ham United U23 @7pm - the Fleet suffered play-off heartbreak last season and should be among the frontrunners in the NLS again. Tickets are available
--------------------------------------------------------------

Saturday 16 July

UEFA Women's Euro 2022
Denmark v Spain @8pm - Group B concludes with its final round of games on Saturday night. After losing their opening fixture to Germany 4-0 on Friday, the Danes face an uphill struggle to qualify and a lot will depend on the midweek round of games on Tuesday to see if they have any chance coming into this. Tickets are sold out but check UEFA's webiste for the latest

Friendlies
AFC Wimbledon v Ipswich Town @230pm - one of the highlights of pre-season will see the Dons play their male and female counterparts from Ipswich in an eye-catching doubleheader with the women's game starting at 445pm. Tickets
Leyton Orient v Tottenham Hotspur U21 @2pm - after playing at Enfield Town on Tuesday, Spurs' youngsters head south to take on the O's in what should be a considerably tougher fixture. Tickets
Sutton United v Charlton Athletic @3pm - last season was full of painful near misses for the U's - letting in a last-minute equaliser in the EFL Trophy Final and missing a play-off spot by one point. Despite this, they wouldn't have expected getting anywhere near either of these positions at the beginning of their debut season in League Two. If they can challenge again, I'm sure they'll be more than happy with that. The Addicks will hope for a play-off push in League One after a rather underwhelming campaign. Tickets
Barnet v Peterborough United @3pm - the Bees have had a couple of tough seasons but Dean Brennan managed to keep them up in 2021/22. How they'll do this year is anyone's guess but the Irish manager doesn't lack drive and really impressed during his time at Wealdstone. As yet, I've seen no ticket details
Wealdstone v Charlton Athletic U23 @12pm - despite having fewer resources, the Stones finished above Barnet in the National League table and they'd love nothing more than to repeat that feat over their old rivals this season. Tickets
Dulwich Hamlet v Arsenal U23 @3pm - after welcoming Sutton to Champion Hill on Tuesday, it's the turn of a Gunners side to visit on Saturday. Big crowds are the norm here so you're strongly advised to buy in advance
A bit further afield
Reading v West Ham United @3pm - prior to heading to Scotland to play Rangers at Ibrox, the Hammers make the relatively short trip to Berkshire to play Championship club Reading in one of the biggest games of pre-season so far. Tickets
Gillingham v Portsmouth @1pm - within easy reach of south-east London, the Priestfield is always worth considering if nothing in the capital takes your fancy. On Saturday they've landed a reasonable game against former Premier League club Pompey. I haven't found anything about tickets on their website yet
Maidenhead United v Brentford B @3pm - York Road is easy to get to by train from Paddington and is well worth a visit as it is the oldest ground in continuous use by the same team, with Maidenhead playing there since 1871. The Bees' second string play some attractive stuff so this could be good. Tickets
St Albans City v Stevenage @1pm - there's a Hertfordshire derby at Clarence Park which is one of my favourite non-league grounds on the periphery of London. Tickets
Hemel Hempstead Town v Morpeth Town @3pm - one of the more unusual match-ups of the day sees HHT welcome 2016 FA Vase winners Morpeth who hail from Northumberland. According to my sources in the north-east, the clubs have bonded over the installation of artificial pitches - go figure!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sunday 17 July

Friendlies
Actonians v Maidenhead United @2pm - it's all about women's football again on Sunday. The hosts welcome the Magpies to Rectory Park for a match between sides from parallel divisions in the fourth tier. Last week it was free admission
Fulham v London Bees @230pm - the Cottagers play in the fifth tier so should expect a challenging afternoon at Motspur Park against the third-tier Bees MATCH OFF

TLFG: 4-10 July 2022

Pre-season is now well and truly upon us.

With many of you posting stories of Friday night trips to Haringey Borough and Hitchin Town,  I made every effort to dash from work down to south-west London to watch a game myself on Saturday afternoon.

My chosen viewing - Raynes Park Vale v QPR U23s.

How the Combined Counties League side, playing in the ninth tier, had managed to land such a fixture was unclear but it was quite an achievement and they gave a very good account of themselves both on and off the pitch.

Very long-term readers of this blog might dimly remember my last visit to Grand Drive which was a league game against Molesey around 10 years ago.

There's absolutely loads to see at the Design Museum's football exhibition

The ground was pretty much as I remembered it but with the R's paying a visit, it was a lot busier - the crowd figure I heard was in excess of 300 which would have done the non-league club a power of good financially.

Having finished work shortly before 3pm, I missed the first 30 minutes by which time QPR were 1-0 down to what I'm told was a highly dubious penalty.

The visitors appealed strongly for a penalty of their own but it wasn't given and the hosts remained ahead at the break.

With wholesale changes taking place during and after the interval, it was hard to keep a track of who was playing but Rangers came back strongly and took a 2-1 lead midway through the second half only for a cracking free-kick to earn a 2-2 draw for RPV.

Far more seasoned watchers of QPR's youth sides (yes, I mean you Chris H) informed me that is was more of an U19 side than an U23 one so the result and performance weren't too bad.

The other highlight of the afternoon was finally getting to meet TLFG reader Andy L-W, his daughter and absolute legend Pie, the non-league dog.

We've chatted online numerous times over the years, so it was great for our paths to finally cross.

The week ahead is action packed but for me, it's going to be all about women's football.

With the Uefa Women's Euro 2022 getting underway, I'm off to Brentford on Friday to watch Germany v Denmark and then on Sunday I hope to watch Actonians in their first pre-season game against Selsey - subject to permission from the Mrs of course.

If you're in London for the Euros or just have some free time that doesn't involve watching football, I'd heartily recommed a visit to the Design Museum in Kensington/Holland Park.

It's currently hosting a fantastic exhibition, which I heartily recommed - Football: Designing the Beautiful Game.

I was lucky enough to receive an invitation to look round it a couple of weeks ago and it was superb.

It includes the history and development of the design of footballs, boots, shirts, cups, logos, posters, stadia - you name it!

There are some great original artefacts that must be worth a fortune to collectors.

At the end, there's even a shop selling old programmes from a huge range of clubs and lots of other things too.

It's on until the end of August so don't miss out.

                                         THE WEEK AHEAD

The highlights of the next few days include pre-season games featuring Premier League, EFL, many of our local non-league sides and a few women's teams too.

TLFG DAILY DIGEST
In the following section, I list, by day, what are in my opinion the most notable games of the week and give some brief reasons for my choice. Check the maps above for kick-off times, ticket info and directions.

Tuesday 5 July

Friendlies
Hendon v Wealdstone @730pm - this fine-looking derby between two old rivals should be your first choice if you're in north-west London on Tuesday. Both clubs have experienced a lot of upheaval over the last 30 years since leaving their historic old grounds. Both are now settled in new homes but away from their traditional heartlands and Hendon have found it harder to grow their fanbase than the Stones. The visitors play two levels above the Greens so should start as favourites. Tickets are £5 and can be bought online or on the gate
Cray Wanderers v Welling United @745pm - the pick of the action on Tuesday is this south-east London derby. You may have seen me mention it before but Cray are London's oldest club so they're worth a watch just for that. Last season was a bit of a struggle for them in the Isthmian Premier but they managed to stay up. Welling play a level above them and had a similar campaign so both will be hoping for better this year
Haringey Borough v Walthamstow @745pm - after narrowly losing to Leyton Orient on Friday, Haringey next welcome the Stow. The club from E17 were crowned Essex Senior League champions last season to move up to the eighth tier Southern League Division 1 Central, one level below the hosts - it will be really interesting to see what they can do

A bit further afield
Woking v Arsenal U23 @745pm - if nothing takes your fancy within the M25 then you could head just beyond it to watch the Cards, of the National League, take on the Gunners' youngsters. Tickets are £12 and can be bought online in advance
Dorking Wanderers v Sutton United @745pm - elsewhere in Surrey, Wanderers entertain local League Two side Sutton as they prepare for their first season in the fifth tier. Tickets are £8 and can be bought online in advance
Hitchin Town v Stevenage @7pm - to the north of London, there's a Hertfordshire derby at the historic Top Field which has been in use since 1873. The Canaries pulled in a crowd of over 2,000 when they played Luton on Friday night so they'll be hoping for another healthy attendance here. Tickets are £13 and can be bought online in advance
--------------------------------------------------------------

Wednesday 6 July

Friendly
Sutton Common Rovers v Crawley Town @745pm - now groundsharing with AFC Whyteleafe, SCR welcome a squad from a League Two club as the Reds send a side to Church Road UPDATE - MATCH CANCELLED

--------------------------------------------------------------

Thursday 7 July

Friendly
Bromley v Sittingbourne @745pm - last time I checked, the details about this were a bit sketchy. I think it's probably correct to say that this is a Bromley U23 game but check on the day to make sure

--------------------------------------------------------------

Friday 8 July

Uefa Women's Euro 2022
Germany v Denmark @8pm - after a one-year Covid delay, the Women's Euros are finally here. With matches taking place all over the country, this is the first of four fixtures being played at Brentford's stadium. With eight wins from 12 tournaments, Germany are the most successful country in the competition's history. However, they didn't even make the semi-finals last time and aren't the side they once were. Denmark, on the other hand, did make the final in 2017 and with a number of stars that include Chelsea's Pernille Harder, they should be more than a match for Martina Voss-Tecklenburg's side. Tickets were sold out but check Uefa's website for the latest

Friendly
Aveley v Dagenham & Redbridge @745pm - the Millers won promotion back to the Isthmian Premier after an exciting battle with Canvey Island for the Isthmian North title. The Essex club welcome local National League side D&R for what will hopefully be a decent derby

A bit further afield
Bracknell Town v Wycombe Wanderers @730pm - the Robins stormed to the Isthmian South Central title last season and now find themselves in the Southern League Premier South. A lot is expected of the Berkshire club who are said to be spending considerable sums on wages in an effort to make further progress. They now groundshare at Sandhurst Town, a few miles from Bracknell so it will be interesting to see what kind of fanbase they are able to build. Wycombe don't have this listed as a first-team game on their website so it will almost certainly be a development side
----------------------------------------------------------------

Saturday 9 July

Friendlies
Boreham Wood v Brentford @3pm - things start getting serious on Saturday when the Bees become the first Premier League side to play a pre-season game. Their now annual trip to Meadow Park is also the Wood's first game of the summer too. The Hertfordshire side were on course for at least a play-off spot last season but their spectacular run to the Fifth Round of the FA Cup seemed to derail them and they fell away quite sharply after impressing so many in the narrow defeat to Everton at Goodison Park. Tickets are £15 and can be bought online in advance
Dartford v Charlton Athletic @3pm - after losing 1-0 to Scottish club Kilmarnock on Friday, the Addicks return south to play a local National League South side. The Darts lost out in the NLS play-offs last season and will hope for at least another top seven finish. Tickets are £10 and can be bought online in advance
Hayes & Yeading United v Hampton & Richmond Borough @3pm - having been in contention for the Southern League title for most of last season, it must have been pretty gutting for H&YU fans to lose to Farnborough in the play-off final. If they had won it, then they'd have been preparing to play alongside Hampton & Richmond in the NLS but it wasn't to be. The visitors missed out of the play-offs and must surely be targetting a top-seven finish this time around. Please note, this match has been switched to Bedfont Sports' ground
Beckenham Town v Welling United @2pm - the Becks are preparing for life in the eighth-tier Isthmian League South East after winning promotion last season from the Combined Counties League. It will be interesting to see how they fare at this level and Welling should provide a stern test

A bit further afield
Crawley Town v QPR @3pm - just to the south of London, not far from Gatwick Airport, Crawley welcome Championship opposition under the new management of Michael Beale. The Bromley-born boss, has made his name as a top coach alongside Steven Gerrard at Rangers and Aston Villa and this is his first job as the top man. He is incredibly well connected and has brought in some decent signings so it will be very interesting to see how he and his R's side get on. Tickets are £10 and can be bought online in advance
Slough Town v Wealdstone @1pm - after starting the week with a tricky trip to Hendon, the Stones next make the short journey west to the Berkshire town of Slough. The Rebels play in the NLS so should be a slightly harder challenge than the Greens
Canvey Island v Concord Rangers @3pm - although Canvey Island is quite a small place, mainly associated with caravan holidays on the south Essex coast, it still manages to host two pretty decent non-league football clubs. They've played in different divisions for a while now but following Canvey's promotion, they're now only a level below sixth-tier Concord. Often feisty affairs, this could be well worth a watch. Tickets are £10
--------------------------------------------------------------

Sunday 10 July

Friendlies
Actonians v Selsey @2pm - aside from Chelsea, Actonians were the top women's football team in west London until newly promoted QPR pipped them to a top-four finish in the fourth tier FAWNL Division 1 South East by just one point. Their preparations for the new campaign begin against the newly renamed Selsey. The Sussex side have dropped the Chichester part of their old name and have moved under the wing of the Selsey men's club. They play in the parallel FAWNL Division 1 South West so it should be a good test for both sides. As I understand, it should be taking place at Rectory Park in Northolt
Fulham v Portsmouth @230pm - the Cottagers play in the women's fifth tier so a visit from third-tier Pompey to Motspur Park should see them tested thoroughly
